Of course the Gov would love to hammer the EV for not giving them the $4.5k plus per year in tax, but then they'd look dumb to to the rest of the world!. Remember the hooting they shout at the world about how "green" we supposedly are?. It is a quagmire certainly, but don't think for one mad minute they missed all the EV happenings. Maybe they'll tax the day lights out of EV's... Then we just go back to the 20th century again. It's going to be fun to watch. Remember the $74k for a new Volt, and how they hit our shores for $20k. Awful lot of tax there I'd say. Then look at the Tesla. A good friend of mine has the ludicrous one, all for less than $100k. Then the LEAF. No wonder Nissan couldn't sell a mid/low range EV. The price 'suggested' by Gov forces made it un-viable to them. Hmmm. I wonder. Four things run this country. Cars, pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies & greed. You can't remove any of the incestuous facets. Luckily the people are the best in the world. Sad thing is, the drivers that can't afford the elevated price tag here are destined to pump noxious fumes around the country, or walk. Maybe the idea of rural shopping will catch back on?. No way a Tesla is on my menu at AU prices, import from elsewhere yes.... But the noses in the troughs have that stitched up tight too. Maybe they saw this coming?. Let's just be as the rego plates say here... "NSW, the backward state".
There's little wonder the first world offers little help, and laughs at our reps at climate meetings is there. But what can we do. Sadly, while corruption is rife, cash throwing gets a nice pension & retirement position, we still are as we are. There are all too few Gov individuals really trying to make Australia great, the rest are ... just not. But then again, there is little deterrent to saying one thing, and doing another. Then use the horrid propaganda platform we have to incense people to believe contrary.
Wait until the horse & cart returns. Yes, we aparrently! Have more money in our pockets.... But what use is it really.

The LEAF has arrived last Wednesday and have so far thoroughly enjoyed the few days I've had it. Our entire weekend's travel needs were covered by the LEAF and in fact it just highlights the level of my 'range anxiety' as I was charging up during the day 'just in case' even though I really didn't need to.
No photos yet as I haven't had time and the plates have not officially arrived yet. (driving around with a temporary permit at the moment)

No rust on front brake calipers. No leaf spy yet, will get one in the near future.
I just visited VicRoads today and the officer processing the registration said the $100 discount was only applicable to hybrids and not pure EVs which I thought was weird.
Any Victorian Leaf owners getting the $100 discounted rego? I was in a hurry and didn't stay to ask more questions, I am planning to call VicRoads tomorrow and enquiry.

So wait to see the paperwork and if they have charged you call up.

That's good to know. I definitely was charged the standard rego fee as the person said the discount applied to Hybrids only and asked me whether the car was hybrid. I said no, the car is fully electric.
I find it interesting even people who work in these departments are not fully informed on what to do. I will contact Vic Roads tomorrow and ask for a refund on the difference.

NSW's antiquated system.
Pay same as a 4.0 diesel or petrol lump. Suffer inconvenience of purposefully restricted charging.
Any real enviro incentive is nil.
Jeeez, you guys are lucky.

Great news! After a 40 minute conversation with 2 operators at Vicroads (neither of whom knew what an electric vehicle was - only hybrids). It has been confirmed that Pure Electric Vehicles do get the $100 discount and that I can apply for a refund of $100 on my registration.
For those who are interested, the form for the refund can be found by Googling 'Vicroads Refund Form'
I've been told to put the phrase 'Electric Car as per Cathy at Policy' as the reason for the refund. I will also need to find some blue EV diamond stickers for my number plate which VicRoads do not have.... yeah... so far the social awareness of EVs is amazing *sarcasm*!

That's true, although it's more a case NSW vehicle tax was increased in 2010 for most cars, but not fuel efficient ones, so there is now a permanent difference in the vehicle tax applied. But I don't think the difference is much - maybe $50 per annum. This is about the only benefit EV drivers get in NSW - I can't think of any others.

Here is a quick photo of the Leaf with it's number plate affixed. NBP is the abbreviation of our pharmacy (North Balwyn Pharmacy)

Here is the link to the applicable regulation regarding the discounted Rego for Electric Cars in Victoria. www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/vic/consol_reg/rsr2009309/s102.htmlreg 102(3)(b) "If a motor vehicle is a hybrid vehicle or an electric powered passenger car, the fee to be paid for registration or renewal of registration of the vehicle is ... the fee that would otherwise be payable under section 9 of the Act or Schedule 3, less $100" (copied from a poster in the Telsa forums)

And here it is.....
"- Given the environmental benefits of petrol-electric hybrid, diesel-electric hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or electric vehicles, the NSW Government wants to encourage people to invest in this type of energy efficient technology. "
Such encouragement, I'm overwhelmed, and now I can buy three more schooners over 53 weeks.
Does this include advertising lumps on state TV without a warning, like "warning, this car consumes a lot of noxious fuel to use". Probably not.
Gee, and did anyone notice this massive incentive over 40 vehicles happen?. I never noticed. Same old, same old. Tax reduced here, propped up a little more there!.
I was shocked at the great Aussie rort Green Slip. It's a game of subsidising those that won't pay for sufficient insurance by those that can. All without any logic on price. Hang on a moment, I feel the urge to bend over and pull out another well thought out expense for having a vehicle.... Did I I miss our mission statement?. Ooopsie. Never mind, I can find something to spend it on, I'm sure.
Sorry chaps, given the Baird-turns, and magic cash pop-up concepts, it's not really an incentive, merely placation. I can't exactly see lump drivers queued at the local(mystical) EV store. EV.... A whaaaat?.

As far as I know that is the only 'emoji' style plate they do. The actual number plate at Vicroads is just 'INBP'. Other templates can be found at www.vplates.com.au lots of football club ones and car enthusiast ones, even camo-style plates... which is kind of counter intuitive. There are so many design templates these days.

It's taken FIFTEEN years to know what a hybrid is(where's the socket is the #1 question asked), so maybe in ten to fifteen more years, you may find they know what they are!. Seriously though, a new Beer comes out, and 80% of AU know it's name in less than a week. One of the most world changing things comes out, and it's unknown to "official" grunts even.

So I finally got my rego discount but not without a fight. Rang RTA head office and was told that my car had to be inspected to get the discount , so drove to Bundoora RTA who inspected it, said it wasn't a hybrid and it didn't qualify. Drove home rang head office again. They found the rule and I was directed to speak to Carolyn at Bundoora RTA. Drove back to the RTA. Carolyn immediately gave me a new rego notice with the discount and filled in a form so I can get a refund for last years reg. All good news. At this point though I had run out of charge. Not enough to go home, not enough to go to the city for my rehearsal/. For the first time I took the car's recommendation for the nearest charging point which was Nissan Bundoora. This charger was well hidden in the back block in a car park. The sign was covered with vegetation and the station was covered in cobwebs! There was no power but I found a switch on the left and it came to life. Used my ChargePoint card and was able to charge. A Nissan manager came out very excited because he had never seen it used. Originally they were a Leaf dealer and he said one of the requirements was to install the charger. Quite funny. Anyway all worked well and in 20 minutes I had enough to get into the city. Wow!

Did they say anything about revising their regulations to allow EVs? It would be clueless if they don't.
That's sad about the Bundoora ChargePoint and the dealer no longer being a LEAF dealer. They won't reconsider?

Honestly, I do wonder sometimes about the dolts employed by some of these government departments. Did the first person you spoke to even check with their supervisor or did they just stare at you saying "computer says no"? They should just have a list of makes/models which qualify for the discount they can look up. In similar situations where there's a chance some transaction will hinge on some specific knowledge, I print out the relevant law/rule first and take it with me, or load up the page on my phone, and then if required show it to the person claiming I'm wrong to prove I'm right. It can save a lot of hassle.

Sorry, I am showing my age. I meat VicRoads when I was talking about the RTA. The Bundoora dealer is still able and willing to service and sell LEAFs but he hasn't had any cars to sell and no one is servicing their LEAF there.

However I did get an apology at the end.

They also suggested me to apply for a refund on the registration fee. Maybe I was lucky.

Employed by the Gov is not an indication of anything here. I guess one must consider that any visit to Gov cash collection stations can be a roulette game, where the visitor(payee) has to do their job for them, or risk errors in the 'transaction'. They may be smiling, happy people, but wouldn't you be if the position merely involved turning up at the correct times. Now the so called education system is churning out 'managers' & qualified's!!! at an incredible rate, there is little expectation of it improving. Been there in years gone by, and have all the tee-shirts. I suppose it could be improved by special junkets for three days where the amazing technological advances are revealed, but excise would have to be increased to support this shock revelation. Best take a paper that reminds them what they should be aware of I guess. One of my past-times is getting quotes from help lines!, and the watching the happy people quoting something else, and then paraphrasing the helpful lines representative. It makes it a more exciting transaction, and worth the money. Keep smiling. They are happy employees. Just humour them. They get paid either way. It's obviously difficult to remember the three basic vehicle types.
