So you reject that premise completely? Speaking with my NISSAN dealer yesterday they say they have investigated two other LEAFs in Perth with an early capacity bar loss. They did the tests that NISSAN wanted them to do and the result was that the battery was OK. One of the reasons for the battery bar loss they said was the high temperatures and as the temperature drops the bar may come back. I call b%^&$*t. A trip to consumer affairs coming up. Still a good car though.

I reckon that is bollocks from the dealer. Half the dealers can't even spel Leaf let alone know anything about the innards. They'll say whatever. As long as you still have enough range to do what you do 95% of the time (i.e. the commute or whatever adds up to the less than 100km's we mostly do) the it doesn't really matter. I feel most people won't be looking to sell their Leafs so it won't affect resale value. If you trade in one with a capacity loss on the new 2017 Leaf Nissan will probably do you a good deal on the trade. And if it still works range wise keep it until it falls over. Or by that time Tesla will be making batteries to fit all EV's and they'll cost $1000.

Should we raise our concerns or express our desire for firmware updates to Nissan AU or maybe to Nissan Japan? Our experience is it falls on deaf ears. Just not enough out there to warrant messing around, from their point of view anyway.
Seriously? How hard can it be to do a firmware update? When you next take your Leaf to the dealer for servicing, they should be able to plug their laptop in (or whatever), run the firmware updater, done.
Has anyone emailed Nissan recently to put the question to them? I will if someone has the email address of the right person.
Cheers.

So you reject that premise completely? I do not accept that premise (that the battery capacity is still like new) when combined with the low mileage done by the three vehicles in Perth and losing a bar of capacity. For the vehicles which have done 30k plus I can accept that the battery capacity will be variable depending upon the battery pack temperature which could result in changes in the number of bars seen on the dash.

Also happy to shoot someone an email about firmware updates. Usually things will get done if enough people complain just to shut us up. Surely can't be that hard like you said.

Not happy Jan, service today, 100% charge, 16050km and Ive lost a bar. Seems way too early. Charge to 80% every few days, run down to 1/4 before charge. Very rarely to 100%. Never Chademo fast Its not too hot here on the coast, car garaged most of the time. Nissan were also concerned and have said they can put it on a "cycler" for two days to see if it improves. Didn't think with our treatment it would be this soon.

My LEAF now has 37,985km. I live in Canberra. I bought the leaf September 2012. The leaf app says my battery health is currently 84.7% so I think in close to losing my first bar. My battery sat on 102% health until 14,000km then it started dropping

Hi Phil, long time no see. We're about on par, I lost my first bar around 38k but the amp hour keeps going up and down slightly every few days depending on the temperature. I'm hoping it'll go back to 12 bars as the weather cools so it'll look complete on the dash. You might have a few months' reprieve too.
I was going through the service manual yesterday, there are some special tools for servicing the LEAF battery which was interesting. I wonder if all LEAF authorised dealers have them and if they'll ever get used. There's a tool for balancing the charge of battery modules and another to test if the battery pack is airtight after servicing.

I'd suspect that balancing tools is what I need right now. Cell #19 is always on the low side. The balancing the car does by itself only lowers charge on particular cells. It doesn't appear to add charge - which is what my cell #19 needs.

Excuse the slightly off topic nature of this post, but I've done some research, and thought that I should - for the benefit of us Kiwi interlopers - introduce them to ... well who other than Jan! Non-Ozzies, you can learn more here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Not_happy,_Jan! www.youtube.com/watch?v=2akt3P8ltLMAnd I'll be sure to practise the phrase in hearing range of any Australian ex-pats that I come across in the next few days.

A photo is clearer I think as well, this is the difference of 14 months and 14,000km. It makes me very nervous that with 3 years of ownership I wont be able to drive the 100km to Brisbane to get it serviced... I actually dont think I would have bought it if I thought capacity would be lost so quickly, Not very happy

There will be more chargers installed as time goes on. So a fading battery will be less of an issue. From Brisbane to Gold Coast, the longest distance without a charger is 60km. Hopefully will be allowed to install chargers at morayfield/caboolture, redcliffe, gatton, toowoomba, Springfield central and beaudesert this year. But convincing people to install them is proving quite difficult.

How far do you think you can go now? Have you checked that your tire pressure is above their recommendation? I think it's more noticeable when driving long stretches.
It's cold consolation to think that the current LEAF battery pack is more heat tolerant and durable than ours. I sometimes imagine how nice it would be if my car got written off so I can get a freshly built model to replace it with. This is assuming Nissan has finally sold out the initial shipment of LEAFs. My insurance has a two year new for old policy and I have about two more months for that miracle to happen.

Is your servicing done at Nissan Moorooka? There are the two fast chargers at Tritium (Wooloongabba) and BMW (Fortitude Valley) en route. There are also plans to put in a Tritium fast charger at Sippy Downs on the Sunshine Coast at the shopping centre. Please post about whether the "cycling" at Nissan makes any difference once it has been done.

I'm wondering whether there have been any firmware updates done for the first model Leaf OS, and whether they helped with battery issues? If there have, we could make more of an argument for it to happen here. Rather than just individual emails, perhaps a group letter would be more powerful, strength in numbers and all.

I asked Nissan about the P3227 update when it first came out and they said it was only applicable to the North American model LEAF. There have been no updates to the Australian delivered LEAF since they started selling it here. Not even GPS maps. Dean at Nissan says, "As for the Sat Nav updates, we no outlook when one will be available yet Matt. This is an issue that Japan is currently trying to resolve globally but have yet to do so."

Ever since my modelS test drive I seem to be on a Tesla email list. Last one told me all about how updates just get uploaded automatically to the vehicle over 3G. Sigh!

Howdy all, it's been a while. We're still happily leafing along every day, dropped the first bar around 30000klm....not worried about it though, that gives me 360,000klm before it has no battery left

Hello stranger! Long time no see. We lost ours at 36k but I think I'm close to getting it back with the cooler weather. No issue for us either, the range is still plenty useable.
