Are you the first person to tell us that. I think one other may have lost one.

Just looked it up, lesmando 24 reported his first lost bar 13 January 2014, but didn't say how far his LEAF had gone.

I lost my first bar at 12,500 km. That's pretty early...may be suffering from high temperature charging at the office Charge Point???

Yeah that's a bit on the low side, not as bad as that guy in Perth who lost his first bar in under 5k kms. Do you leave your car at full charge for long periods in the heat or anything like that? I think Nissan should have buried the capacity bars in a menu somewhere rather than have it out on the dash. It's always there when it doesn't have to be and makes it look like there's something wrong with the car.

I prefer the bars being there. Is honest. I wish all petrol / diesel cars had a meter showing how much power degradation has occurred due to age, I think people would be shocked if it was on display like the LEAF

About 50/50 split between 100% and 80% charge. Rarely leave it charged at 100% for any extended period. I typically can drive back and forth to work twice without charging, so typically the car goes through a wide range of charge state with many nights at ~60% charge. Not outrageously hot in the carpark, so a bit surprising to see a lost bar.

If my Honda had a capacity bar of how much oil it's consuming/leaking with age I'd feel just as dejected. Les, you'll probably be the first among us to get your battery pack repaired or replaced. Are you hoping for a warranty job or did you have a threshold in mind?
Mike, maybe your car was down a few % when you bought it due to age and improper storage. I lost my first bar two months ago at 34k kms and it hasn't made much difference day to day, it just feels psychological.

We always charge to 100%, our daily commute means that we now get home with somewhere between 15-30km left on the guessometer. We occasionally use the fast charger in North Strathfield if we need to go somewhere else rather than straight home. Car is only exposed to normal Sydney heat and is garaged all the time at home and 2-3 weekdays in an undercover car park. In the month or so prior to the bar disappearing we noticed the range was showing as less when we unplugged and started up of a morning. It has dropped around 20km in range from when we got the car just over a year ago, until the last couple of months we had only had the low battery warning once or twice, now we almost expect it just before we get home.

You don't get warranty until the 4th bar is gone (33.75% capacity loss). Even so, I have a ~68km round trip, so I can loose to 5 bars and still be fine.

That's about the same for us with the GOM range. I haven't been to the North Strathfield QC for a while, how is it these days? Wish there was some way to tell how much usage it gets besides Plugshare check-ins. Have you tried overinflating your tires slightly? I find it helps improve the range a bit. I also like to follow container trucks on the M5. Not dangerously close or anything like that but that makes a noticeable difference too.

To minimise battery degradation, I aim the timer to finish charging my leaf to 80% just right when I need it in the morning. That way the battery would only sit at high charge for the shortest amount of time. The leaf gives an estimate of how long it would take to charge to 80%, but I find it to be a wild over-estimate. I find it typically takes less than 2/3 the estimated time to charge the car.

I find it typically takes less than 2/3 the estimated time to charge the car. That's a really good idea. I might give that a go. Only problem is if I make a mistake and end up without having charged at all. (stupidity is it's own reward) Jack Rickard reckons Lithium cells prefer to live at 50%. My round trip is 40km. So I should set the timer to start charging in the morning so that it's about 70% done when I interrupt it and drive to work. When I get home I'll have about 30%. I have noticed on Leaf-spy that cell number 19 is looking a bit sick (always has lower than average voltage), so I'm expecting to loose a bar soon. I'm on almost 20,000km, so I guess it's probably due.

The odometer reading is no indicator of imminent bar loss - there are plenty of forum posts citing 60-80,000 km before the 1st bar goes. The best indicator is AHr; when/if you get to 55.4 you are close.

I wish all petrol / diesel cars had a meter showing how much power degradation has occurred due to age, I think people would be shocked if it was on display like the LEAF Yeh, petrol cars also loose range with age due to degradation of an engine's efficiency. It's actually worse than a LEAF because it would still cost the same to fill the tank even though it won't travel as far compared to when new. For the LEAF when the battery capacity goes down it would cost less and less to fill.

We've had our Leaf a little over 3 months and we've just ticked over 2000k (we did about 9000 km per year in our old Corolla). We charge to 80% on timer and the car isn't exposed to temperature extremes. So fingers crossed it will be quite some time before we lose a bar.
PS. "Lose" and "Loose" are different words with different meanings. Sorry for being a pedant but this particular mistake is one that really irritates me big time. I'll now bite my tongue...

Tell me something I don't know Joseph. Does the i3 have capacity bars or anything to tell you its battery capacity and temperature?

I lost my first bar of battery health tonight after a full charge. 2011 vehicle has travelled 20,000 km. After full charge the GOM shows 154km, but I only get 100km out of the battery pack with cautious mixed driving. I charge about twice a week to 100%. I'm the second owner so I don't know the past charging history. Leaf Spy app SOH (State of Health) is 83.6%, 235 GIDS. First bar usually goes at around 84% SOH.

EVangelist, the use of the Leaf Spy app to access your battery health status may refute (or confirm) your concerns about losing a bar. The first bar usually disappears when the state of health (SOH) drops below 84%. I expect your SOH to be well above 85%.

My first bar has been bouncing back and forth. About 32 months old, 24k or so on the clock. For a while, when charging to 100% the first bar wouldn't be there but would "grow back" during the first couple of KMs in eco mode. But more recently the first bar came back after recharging to 100%. Perhaps it was the really hot weather or something.
Anyway, I'll keep an eye on it. Haven't measured it with the dongle recently, might have a look.

Ahh. This was the page I was looking for before. Thanks Jim.
8,500km, 11 months, Perth. First bar loss at 8,500km. Silver car.
I have posted elsewhere but this is a more appropriate thread.

My first bar returned today after a brief disappearance last night. Must be because the battery management system (BMS) had time to balance the weaker cells in the battery pack, returning the SOH back to 85%. If Jim's experiences are any indication, I expect that I'll be teetering between 11 and 12 bars over the next few months.

And this is the problem with all our AU LEAFs. Unlike the rest of the world who have received many firmware updates we have not received any.
The capacity bars shouldn't be coming and going. the updates we haven't received would fix this and also adjust the way the bars are lost.
Which makes me wonder about our warranty of 70%/4 bars lost. Our bars don't dissapear like the rest of the worlds cars. So why is our warranty using the same standard?
We really should have the updates.

The capacity bars shouldn't be coming and going. the updates we haven't received would fix this and also adjust the way the bars are lost. If the bars are locked precisely to battery health then maybe they can come and go. During hot periods won't the battery health measure lower than cooler, meaning the overall health fluctuates? If it's a straight - 84% lose a bar, then I could see it wandering off and mysteriously reappearing.

Speaking with my NISSAN dealer yesterday they say they have investigated two other LEAFs in Perth with an early capacity bar loss. They did the tests that NISSAN wanted them to do and the result was that the battery was OK. One of the reasons for the battery bar loss they said was the high temperatures and as the temperature drops the bar may come back.
I call b%^&$*t.
A trip to consumer affairs coming up.
Still a good car though.
