Hi, new forum member here!
Does anyone know when/if the updated 2013 model will be available. I am definitely going to buy a leaf but would much prefer to wait for the updated model. I did check my local nissan dealer and was told maybe June, but he really wasn't sure.

It's a mystery. I have a feeling we won't see the refreshed model at all. We will get the next one. Probably a couple years away. My thoughts anyway!
And welcome!

Interesting thought, I think they may just be waiting until they have cleared all their current stock, I noticed even Malaysia and South Africa have the later 2013 model for sale.

Yes clearing stock indeed. When they first released the LEAF here Nissan did state they thought they would sell in the 'hundreds' each moth. So that sounds like 100 per month to me, so maybe 1000 cars shipped? Almost 300 sold so far... Even if they only shipped 500 in the first batch that still puts it about a year away from selling out unless they drop the price further...

My understanding is that LEAF sales are picking up exponentially. The problem has been that the general public are totally unaware of them ( due to the lack of advertising ). But, as owners, we all know how impressed those who know nothing of EVs or LEAFs are once they get to ride in or drive our cars. Just do the maths - assume your enthusiasm / demonstration leads to just two people buying LEAFs, and they cause two more people to buy LEAFs, etc.. . . . the existing stock will soon be cleared. Back on post, many people have felt that the benefits of the later version did not justify the wait. Why deny yourself the pleasure for an indefinite period for so little gain ?

perhaps they could do an apple deal where if one has purchased a mac just before (a week) the next model comes out, one can upgrade to the newer model, possibly for a small fee. graham corcoran suggested to nissan a car sharing scheme in Perth that would have exhausted the stock, but Nissan wasn't interested another crazy thing is the $3410 price for a replacement 10A EVSE. I should ask Nikki Gordon Bloomfield how much a UK replacement 10A EVSE costs. my hunch is that Origin, Chargepoint Australia and NIssan are in cahoots to get punters to go for their wall boxes. also perhaps nissan could do another apple thing, bring in the new model at $45K somehow australia/nz got the top of the range vehicle. in america buyers had the option to forego a) dcdc fastcharge chademo b) solar panel 12vdc trickle charger c) fog lights d) rear camera e) auto headlights sfbayleafs.org/commentary/2013/09/2013-vs-2011-nissan-leaf-whats-new-whats-gone-whats-changed/hmmm, next gen LEAF has less performance, but is lighter & has greater range, making it more IMIEV like in MPGe ie now 114 MPGe up from 99 MPGe vs imiev's 112 MPGe the Chevy Spark EV is more fun if it ever gets to Australia. www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/evsbs.shtmltesla model s only gets 89MPGe for top of the range 85kWh and 95MPGe for 60 kWh model cos it is a 1.8tonne vehicle, interestingly similar weight to the volt. insideevs.com/nissan-leaf-price-drops-to-39990-in-australia-after-7000-reduction/just go for it! compare the competition mitsu website still says $48k + ORC volt $59k + ORC nissan is a relative steal. I would buy the next gen LEAF at $45k ... maybe ... if they fix the whine. www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=4597here is my review of the ECU Nissan LEAF. forums.aeva.asn.au/forums/ecu-leaf-review_topic3739.html

Another concern is that this model has not been manufactured in Japan since early 2013, so I assume the ones on sale here have been just sitting in storage somewhere for about 12 months, not sure what effect this could have on the battery?

Welcome to the Forum jgprice. Don't know if batteries deplete if they are just left sitting there. I've had my LEAF 16 months and the battery certainly appears to be as good as new. I have only done just over 3,000 kms but I guess even that is a lot more than just sitting idle.

Well we are one leaf closer to getting the newer model. I put a deposit down for a current model leaf yesterday.

Congrats and welcome caskings! And welcome jgprice. If our forum is any indication, membership has increased steadily over the last couple of months so seems like the LEAF is indeed gaining momentum.

The price drop to $40k took it from "I'd like a BEV one day" to "I can do this" once I factored in the petrol savings Thank you for the warm welcome everyone

Yeah, I think that convinced a lot of people. Not uncommon with new technologies, they come down in price quickly as the R&D costs get under control. Can't wait until they cost less than petrol cars and then still have the added benefits of no petrol, cheap servicing and the rest.
You won't regret your decision, we love our LEAF and smile every time we drive, even after 20 months.

The Leaf is nice, the Chevy Spark probably is too. Personally I miss my first love I was so sure I would just wander down to a local Chrysler dealership & buy one. So naive!

Close to making a decision myself on an EV (longtime lurker on this forum . I drove a LEAF last week and it lived up to expectations but I'm still having thoughts about the Gen 2 model. I can't believe that we can't get the heated seat option here in Oz. Besides the slightly larger battery on the Gen 2 I really like the idea of the heat pump and seat heaters as that would do it for me. I like my warm car and don't want to get caught doing the whole drive home heater off deal.

Welcome Southenvolt, good to have you here!
My guess is we won't see the second gen model here for the reasons outlined above. Still, I'm happy to say that the LEAF was something they got right the first time. Using the heater can be factored into your charging schedule and, unless you are driving REALLY REALLY far each day, shouldn't have a big impact.
One of the misconceptions is if you use the radio, lights, and air con you will run out of power quickly. It's amazing when you bring up the current usage page and see just how little those things use, and many of them use the 12v battery anyway!
My advice is to get the best deal you can on the LEAF and never look back. That's what we did and I for one have no regrets for paying close to $60k for mine by the time smoke cleared because I have had the joy of driving it for 20 months now.
At the current prices it's a total no-brainer! ;-)
Again, welcome and hope you join the ranks of ownership.
Jim

Thanks Jim. I have been closely monitoring my km's for a few weeks now to see how I would fare with an EV or range extender type vehicle. I'm disappointed we won't get the second gen one's as I think you might be right with your assumptions. I'd really like a BMW i3 but they are not here until November at the earliest, will probably be $60K and are a first generation too . I'm thinking a Leaf for a three year lease and then a newer EV, i3 or cheap Tesla or even maybe the next Nissan thing. I'm also thinking there might be some deals available as the new one I test drove (40 odd km's) was priced at $39,900 but when I asked about other colours (which apparently are all available in stock in some holding facility at the docks) he started to push me towards the one he had on the yard and was indicating there could be a deal to be had

If you haven't come across it already, there's a popular US LEAF forum called mynissanleaf.com which has plenty of DIY resources. Unfortunately it's been down all day but I do remember seeing a post on how to install your own seat warmers and wire the switches to the centre console so that looks pretty much factory fitted. It's fairly hands on and involves pulling the centre console and seats apart, but there were plenty of photos to show how to do it if you're keen. Which city are you from? If we have the meet in Sydney in a few weeks maybe you can come say hi. I'm certain there are deals to be done. At least $1500 off if you buy a demo.

Yep, if you take demo they will discount or throw in extra's. My sales person offered car mats / boot matt / servicing etc if I took the demo unit over one being shipped in.
Since I wanted one in a hurry and it only had 147kms on the clock I took him up on it. I also had another dealer offer $1500 off their demo unit, but it was already on hold / sold subject to finance.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqTA_gA7exs100miles realistic range. remote key FOB unlock LED lighting in charge port 3x more efficient heater integrated motor/charger moved to the front. Norway 98% renewable power, hydro & wind, 2% import power from Europe in winter. Hopefully the battery is better. I wouldn't buy a LEAF unless they've upgraded their battery warranty to 5 years min.
