Hi all,
I'll be on holidays in Melbourne from 13 to 18 April, and was looking to hire a car while there. I'll need some range and was looking for either a plug-in hybrid of a Tesla. Anyone have any ideas.
I've done some Googling and the best I could find is a Hybrid Camry or Prius from Avis.
cheers,
Mark

Thanks Feng, I went to GoGet, applied for membership, got my SmartCard, and hired Pablo the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Job done.

Incidentally the hotel, The Alto on Bourke, doesn't charge for parking of EV and Hybrids (normally $20 per day), and even provides complimentary charging. WooHoo!

Reserved for EV's? Apparently they will talk us through the process of where to go, and how to use/charge, when we arrive. I get the idea that they are pretty serious about sustainability, and are happy to bend over backwards to help. I don't know if they would be willing to charge someone who is not a customer on a casual basis. I'll ask when I get there. cheers Mark

No chance of a one off with them. Membership plus monthly charge, then pay as you use. Expensive hire car system in reality.
Their concept is for many to share a car, not random use.

Hmm, must be using quite often. The average person finds all the overheads a little pricey.

Nope, probably use it once every six months or so. Usually when I need a van.

Still relies upon other factors though. For many reasons, I did consider it, mostly the parking, but it stopped there. For two or so times a year, the cost failed to make any sway in my reasoning. Availability often lacked convenience. Travel to a next option negated the reason to take one, I was almost there, and then I could reserve, but paid by the time it sits there, so release and it may not be there again. Or worse. The things & conditions people leave shared cars in can be off-putting to say the least. Plus, of course, the cost. More convenient to use a cab, and claim it back. That way city congestion with vehicles cluttered everywhere blocking potential routes was reduced. I figure that if there's a road, and someone can park there, it's an expensive parking place. The costs for one piece of road with a car parked there almost all day don't sit comfortably with me. It could be spent on better things. A taxi, moves in and around, and indeed there are companies that move goods on taxi rates. Take the 300 or so of them out, and that's a start at removing un-necessary clutter. Their enviro awareness statement fails at the first hurdle. Very few low emission vehicles in the fleet when compared to rattling smoke pump vehicles. Surely a greater increase in charging points to encourage zero emission transport would be a cleaner thing SydCity could spend money on, rather than widening expensive roads for more soot pump vehicles to take root on. I thought that was one of the cities mission statements.
I personally don't want to start a vehicle, which from cold, has a phenomenal amount of exhaust fumes to enable it to get to running temp & emission figures, only to switch it off, while it still is belching out noxious fumes a mere few kilometres away., still cold, & still in the confines of the city... followed by a parking space again?.
The costs are immense, I stand by that.
