So my Leaf came up for it's registration renewal, and I thought I'd look at the breakdown of costs. The largest part of registration here is the ACC levy, which is a kind of insurance, and so the safer your car the less you pay. The Leaf is band 4, the safest band, at $151.13.
Fair enough I thought, but then checked with a colleague who has a 2005 Mazda 6. His ACC levy was only $68.46 (also band 4). His car is 4-star ANCAP, the Leaf is 5-star. Huh?
A bit of further digging and I found this document:

Here I discovered that the Petrol Leaf costs $68.46, and confirmed the Non-Petrol version costs $151.13. Looks like the Leaf gets bundled in with the Diesel, LPG, CNG, which are thought of as riskier. I'm wondering if this is actually the case? I'd guess that it actually isn't, there just hasn't been an electric category set up.
Anyway, I'm still laughing that they included a Petrol powered Leaf as a category.

Hi madkiwi What isn't spelt out with this ACC banding is that the ACC levy is extracted from two sources, the annual fee, plus fuel tax paid at the pump for petrol cars or road user charges for diesel vehicles, on an annual basis. EV's of course are not liable for either fuel tax or road user charges, so the Government applies a one-off annual levy which is higher than for ICE cars but with no additional fuel tax paid throughout the year.

Hi Madkiwi,
Bit disappointing about the registration cost but I suppose they are making sure they clip the ticket as we don't pay petrol taxes. Looking to buy a second hand Leaf here in Christchurch, just from a dealer though as too chicken to do the whole import thang. I'd be keen to hear any additional advice you have (read your earlier posts). Tempted to invest in a OBD2 Car Diagnostic Scanner like the one you linked to on Banggood to check batteries on 1st Gen Leafs we are looking at but wonder how the importers would react? Hi Dave Plenty of Leaf owners will tell you Leaf Spy is a necessity, not just something to consider. DON'T buy without either the dealer showing you battery AHr and SOH, or you checking this out for yourself, preferably the latter. Walk away if the dealer isn't interested - there are plenty of importers now and lots of competition. You could do a lot worse than getting Autolink in Auckland to sort out one that suits you; they are the biggest and most experienced Leaf importer, have an excellent reputation, and will deliver. A number of dealers are offering to, or automatically modifying Japanese Leafs to provide an NZ GPS. In some models, functionality is lost as a result. Don't go there without fully discussing the pros and cons with the dealer. The radio band can be extended anyway, and a portable GPS gives the same info. Also, it is not possible to get NZ maps data - Nissan has never provided it. If you are on Facebook, check out NZ EV Owners group. Happy hunting!

If you want to borrow an OBD dongle for a bit to try out cars, you're welcome to borrow mine. Also, one Christchurch outfit that I know will provide LeafSpy printouts with their cars is EV Imports, and they've opened a branch here in Christchurch (based in Alexander). So will NZEV (http://www.nzev.co.nz/) based in Rangiora. NZEV imports UK Leafs, whereas EV Imports brings them in from Japan. Happy to catch up for a chat if you want to chew over Leafs at any time. As much that levy sucks, I still envy you guys in the 'Middle Earth'. Australia should've allowed a similiar approach, i.e. allow to import EVs.
