Are there any Leaf owners regularly charging from a 10A GPO? How are you doing it?
I see the Leaf comes with a level 1 EVSE that pulls 9.75A, but is fitted with a 15A socket. Holden sell an EVSE for the volt that is 10A.
My carport is detached from the main house and is feed by a single 2.5mm2 feed straight from the switchboard underground via conduit. Currently it runs just a single 10A GPO and the light, so loading on this circuit isn't a problem.
I would also like the ability to charge it at other homes. Having a 10A plug makes finding a socket more prevalent.

Hi cpeacock, We had a dedicated 15 amp point installed in the garage with a screw in connection for the supplied Nissan charger and purchased the Holden Volt charger to carry in the boot for if we are away and need to recharge at a friends

Thanks Guys - either the Jaycar or the ampfibian unit looks the way to go.
Has anyone not had a 15A GPO installed, but instead undertakes day to day charging using one of these devices?

That would be me I live in a rental and I only got permission (4 months after I asked for it) to install a 15 amp GPO last week. Honestly at this point I'm not going to bother, unless I can get a cheap 15 amp EVSE to go with it.

At home, I only have a 10amp outlet and I use an ampfibian adapter. The 10amp outlet is on a dedicated circuit (w/20amp breaker), so I'm sure not to trip anything with a unintentional additional load. The amphibian works great and is handy to take with me as a back up on trips that I know will test the range of my Leaf. It's also completely waterproof and has cord cleats to prevent inadvertent pull apart. After about an hour of charging, the cord on the 10amp side of the ampfibian gets just slightly warm to the touch...hardly can tell. On the 15amp side, I have a 10 meter 15amp extension cord connecting to the Nissan EVSE. With the 10 breaker built into the ampfibian, I'm completely confident this arrangement is safe.

Thanks Caskings & Mike. Might inquire about a test drive on Friday I'm a little more confident now. Caskings - I'm also in a rental. I'm sure the LL would approve it, but the detached nature of the carport, poor roof access in the carport structure etc suggests the job is harder than average. At the end of the day its a dedicated circuit with one GPO and a light on it serviced by a 16A breaker. I agree Mike, with a 10A breaker in either the ampfibian or Jaycar portable RCD, it should be completely safe.

My partner and I both have iMievs, which also have a 15A socket...we regularly charge on a 10A outlet, using an adapter cord. The 2012 imiev EVSE charges at a shade under 10A anyhow. My 2010 will pull about 12A, but only for a short time when first plugged in. I've never tripped a breaker yet......

I personally think you are better off buying the Holden (GM) EVSE ($350 RRP) then the ampfibian ($269 RRP). This way you get a 2nd EVSE (very handy) that can plug into a standard 10A power point and it is only about $80 difference in price. The ampfibian seems well overpriced to me.

get my volt if you want to test your RCDs forums.aeva.asn.au/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=3787just tripped out the main CB/RCD at The Avenue with the 15A Clipper Creek unit and my volt. The volt is in for a service today. I wonder if there will be a firmware update to fix this issue. With the 10A Holden EVSE, volt defaults to 6A each time. With 15A EVSEs, volt knows to pull 14A.

g4, you are always welcome to charge your iMiev at my place ( that applies to all other W.A. Forum members ), but there's no way I'm letting your Volt anywhere near my systems

I am now selling 5 meter charger cords that plug into your home Australian 10A powerpoint and has a J1772 plug on the other end to plug into your Nissan Leaf (or any other EV - J1772 is the international standard). The price is A$395 including shipping to anywhere in Australia. To order one, please email leafplugin@gmail.com or ring me on 0403 153 999.

Just to clarify, how are these different from the many other portable EVSEs available from established web stores?

The lowest price we have seen for a similar cord is $485.00. I do not think our cords are different but are specifically designed for the Australian market.
