Glad your brother has ' Joined the clan ' Jim - you wouldn't have had any influence there, would you ? If you think they have it easy in the U.S., and it's hard in Australia, spare a thought for those in Singapore - a standard type Camry would set you back around 100,000 Singapore dollars ( ? around Au$95K ). I am trying to discover what a LEAF would set you back in Singapore. I haven't seen any LEAFs in the wild here yet, but have seen a couple of the Renault all-electric vans running around. This is what greeted us in the arrivals hall at Changi Airport in Singapore - ( a huge advertisement for the LEAF )

Jim perhaps these posts can be moved to a new post titled "charging in Singapore"

Have phoned the main Nissan dealer, which put me through to another number, which just rang out / did not answer. Over a week ago, I sent an email, and have had no response. So I can't answer the question. Do these guys want to sell the LEAF or not ?

First, I will answer g4's question - yes, it was the gen 2 LEAF. Secondly, I will answer my own question - they are unable to sell any - because they don't have them. Let me explain. Singapore is a roughly diamond shaped island, measuring about 40 kms wide by about 22 kms deep into which are crammed around 5.5 million people. So efficient transport is critical. And their MRT ( Mass Rapid Transit ) trains ( fully automated, no drivers ) which are underground in the city and rise to overhead tracks above the traffic outside the city ) are certainly that. This is supported by an extensive bus system, and 24,000 ( very cheap fare ) taxis. The last thing the Singaporean authorities want is the congestion that bedevils so many Australian capital cities. So they address this two ways - (1) a congestion tax in the city centre ( which Perth badly needs ) and (2) limiting the number of licensed cars on the road ( imagine how popular that would be in Australia So, when I eventually got hold of Nissan Singapore I was told that suppliers have to bid for allocations of new vehicles. Last year they were allocated 30 ( gen 2 )LEAFs. These have all been sold ( @ SG$80K apiece ) - to businesses, private individuals, hire firms, and government bodies for ' trials '. This year they have a zero allocation, hence none for sale. I would have thought that Singapore would have been perfect for the LEAF because of the limited distances, but the air-con would take a pounding. There was no sign of any renewables - all their electricity comes from diesel powered generators.

China has that rule too limiting cars but EVs are except. and you can't be serious about the diesel even coal companies use solar to back up there diesel generators because diesel cost so much per kWh.

Whilst solar still produces under cloud cover, it's efficiency can be significantly reduced. The fact that Singapore gets a lot of cloud cover could contribute to its apparent absence.
