Super Economy (tariff 31) for charging?

Hi.

I'm a new Leaf owner and I have a sparky coming on Wednesday to wire up a 15a wall socket for charging.

I was hoping to find out if others are using economy or super economy tariffs for charging?

Reading about them suggest you can connect whatever "appliance" that doesn't require constant power. The examples given we're pool pumps, large hot water systems and washing machines.

Since I only charge from 9pm onwards, and charging overnight, it makes sense to use tariff 31 since that is the cheapest rate at $0.136/kW compared to almost 30c/kW in the regular tariff.

Is anyone using tariff 31 or other similar low-cost tariffs for charging their Leaf? And is it even legal to use tariff 31 for charging purposes?

rules vary across the country... controlled load is the term used by ausgrid and that doesn't allow any powerpoints it has to be a hard wired or fixed appliance. (which pushes the judgement of what should be connected to it on the sparky... if it's not legal you ping it back to the sparky because he shouldn't of done it)

when the say doesn't require constant power i think they mean is allowed to be remotely turned off. ie not a fridge as it'll turn off in peak time and your food will go warm and try to kill you. air conditioners will also not like having there power dropped at random either.

so really your car won't care. especially if you use the 80% timer as it's not good to charge a LEAF from 95% to 100% you should be lower before you try to get to 100%

And the Origin website says it's for water heating... And some days the supply may not even be turned on...

I'd pass, what if your almost flat from a long day and plug in as usual to a PowerPoint that shouldn't be connected to the tariff anyway, and then the supplier doesn't turn power on for it that day, good morning, no charge.

I am an origin customer in VIC and yes they are a rip off but that's another story, our off peak rate is only .14_____ anyway so it's really no difference. Lots of suppliers off peak rates for time of use are around this price.

Do you have time of use rates now or a single rate?

We have both time of use and single rate tariffs in qld. The ToU tariff has a fixed daily charge that is 3 times the standard tariff fixed daily charge though :/

I'm planning on doing the maths on switching over to ToU after my next power bill arrives.

Bob Herbert.Been using off-peak since I got the LEAF,no problems.

In qld I use tariff 33 that guarantees 18 hours per day every day. That means generally 0700-0900 off, and 1700 to 2100 off. It gives me plenty of on time to top up or fully charge overnight. I only do 80% normally and 100% for special occasions.

The 15a socket was installed yesterday and was a quick job. Took <1 hr and total cost was $220.

The sparky put it on its own circuit with Its own 20a rcd.

I asked about the different tariffs and he filled the energex paperwork out for me with tariff 33 selected.

I now have to wait for energex to send out someone to install a meter for the new circuit.

Once the meter is installed on the circuit, changing between tariffs can be done over the phone.
