Blech. Always going to be growing pains and false starts in the new brave world. Things are starting to mature now, just too late for Better Place...

So true, Jim. Unfortunately that isn't what Andrew Bolt was saying

You really have to read the whole article as there's an awful lot of info there. Not just the two seconds worth that bolt ripped out to post on his blog for some reason: www.fastcompany.com/3028159/a-broken-place-better-placeIt's an interesting read and you can see that Better Place as a Company was doomed from the start due to the nature of the founder. The reason he was good at some things was the same reason he was bad at running the Company. It shows that Tesla has been doing it correctly and following a much more successful strategy and roadmap.

The comments at the end of that original article show it to be even more complicated than that. I know that is true as I am Evan Thornley's Mum for those of you who don't already know

By the way, Evan wasn't sacked as Global CEO, as is suggested in that original article. He walked out when the Board decided to abandon the Australian operation and just keep the parts of the business in Israel and Denmark,as he reckoned Australia was integral to the success of the whole business and he was proved right in a very short space of time, when the whole thing went bust.

So somebody tries something new and entrepreneurial and the Right Wing take aim.
Just how many ICE engine car manufacturers went bust in the first 20 years of the development of the ICE car? If we stopped doing something because we or somebody else failed we would not even be walking.

The conservatives do have a real problem with startups like Better Place which are in anyway green. On the one hand they are supposed to be pro innovation and all things entrepreneurial - GOOD!! But EVs are just too green for them, and in their tiny little heads they lump us in with carbon tax and saving whales - BAD!! So when I see someone like Andrew struggle with this kind of dissonance I always have to pause just to be sure which side has won today. I look forward to hearing him championing Better Place. I can hear it now - "at least they stuck there necks out and had a go, not like those slimeballs at Holden, Ford, and Toyota, all of whom found it just to hard in Australia - poor dears" I always have to smile when I hear from Mr Bolt, he comes across as being so sure he is right all the time, but when you look at what he says - it's just cribbed from someone else. I've never heard him say anything original yet. He is one of those Journalists who's opinion matches the last person he talked to. And he is so deathly afraid of anything new it's mind boggling. Together his lack of originality, and his fear of the new make him a really toxic conservative. But he is a lot of fun though.

Didn't know he was your Son. That article is the first mention that he was sacked as I'd never heard that one before and didn't think it was the case. He was right to run for the hills!

Sad tale. Hows this for a crazy idea? We get 30 x 200w solar panels = 6kw = $6k, 30 x 12v/125Ah solar batteries = 45kwh = $4.5k Add chademo (the non mains version is surprisingly cheap), ip cam/web page, packaging = $4.5k. For $15k we have a half hour fast charger that can recharge 2 Leafs every 2 days (assuming 4 sun hours/day worst case) that doesn't need much in the way of installation & costs nothing to run. All we need to do is convince some green local council on Sydney's outskirts to fund it, give us somewhere to put it & we have added the first ~130km to the EV highway.
Tough sell? OK how about this then. 3.6kw mains charger $2k, 22.5kw of battery $2.5k, chademo etc $4.5k. For $9k we get a 30min fast charger that can do 1 Leaf every 6 hrs (mains charger runs continuously).

Chris,
looks a lot more possible than it has been.
How sure are you of your figures? Particularly 30 x 12v/125Ah solar batteries = 45kwh = $4.5k. And the chademo etc = $4.5k

Add chademo (the non mains version is surprisingly cheap), I don't believe these exist (list of certified www.chademo.com/wp/chademocharger/ ) .... nothing I can see there that is non mains powered what are you thinking of exactly?

It looks like bolt only wrote a few lines, he cut and paste the rest. The original article has lots of people who declined to comment. So not sure what is true / embellished. The peoples comments are pretty horrid, mostly uninformed. But the Better Place guy destroyed the company long before it came to Australia. Either way, it is very old news.

Figures are pretty solid but the best way forward is anything but clear. I guess that's the BetterPlace legacy, easy to get your fingers burned.
