When I first say this a few months ago I was a little weirded out too.
But let's think for a moment about Japans urban areas.
Not everyone has their own off street parking. Communal lots and parking tower garages are very common.
So lots of Japanese only use Chademo for their charging needs.
So while initially it seems impractical to us, for them it is perfectly normal.
My Japanese 'in-laws' live in a suburban area but only have space for one small kei car but their household is a three car house. The other two are parked in a communal lot a few hundred meters from the house.
So while they could charge an imiev at home the likes of the LEAF and i3 simply would be to wide for their home parking space. Also both neighbors on either side have no parking space.

I'm not so much concerned with the weirdness aspect (I agree it is a bit strange), as the question "will they do the same thing here?". I actually think it would be a good thing if they do, as this would mean we will avoid having a standards war in Australia. If all the new entrants to the Australian market use J1772 and/or Chademo, I think that would be a very good thing.
The last thing we want is beta -vs- VHS.

I visited the brisbane BMW dealer today in fortitude valley to play in the i3 they have on display (no test drives). It is very nice. It had a mennekes CCS fast charge port. But that could be just a British model?

True we don't compare that well to the Japanese, with only a few Chademos on the ground but there are no mennekes here at all that I know of. Though there must be something for the road-show, (maybe a portable EVSE equivalent). Not sure how they get 7.4KW with 16Amps. Sort of implies something exotic (expensive), like 3-phase doesn't it. This whole thing has the same feel I used to get back in the 90's when someone came up with a great new program, and MS would squash it with mountains of FUD even though their equivalent product was years out. MS was able to make this work because they had such a dominant position. I don't know if BMW can though.
