That's good, though I read there was much more to the story, like he was asked several times not to trespass on school grounds and was generally unpleasant. I'm 100% if it was one of us in that situation it wouldn't have escalated.

I think he became unpleasnt after the police searched his car.
Also the police were all G'ed up because it was a 911 call involving unlawful access to school grounds. I've observed in the past, police tend to assume the worst as a first responce, and they have real trouble admitting their time is being wasted.
However you look at it: spending the night in the lock up, for talking back is desproportiinate.
Seems to me the bigger offence would be the improper use of the emergency number.

I heard he had been warned about trespassing on school grounds and illegally using the tennis courts multiple times.
The more I learn about it the more it seems like it was his fault and not a police overreaction.

True Jim, but they were unaware of this at the time they responded to the 911 call. They only learned of this after the event.

If he got belligerent he would get brought in for that reason, the conviction came later, probably from a number of things. It seems clear this has very very little to do with ยข5 of electricity and everything to do with someone's personality making things much worse for them! ;-)
