Hello, I live in Adelaide and have recently purchased a 2019 Leaf import (model S I believe). I've had the dash menus converted to english. I'm still getting to know the vehicle... haven't progressed beyond the essentials of driving and charging yet! I'd like to understand how the drive recorder works and its functions (I have a manual in Japanese). Thought I'd say hello and see if there was anyone else in Adelaide on this forum. 🙂

Welcome to the forum. I'm not an Adelaidian, and I have a 2012, so I don't even know what a "drive recorder" does in broad terms.

Hi lorry, welcome. My 2015 Grey Import has a factory Drive Recorder, aka Dashcam. With Google Translate on the phone (holding the camera up to the Japanese text), I worked out how to use it. But yours might be different to the one in my older Leaf. Does yours look like this (picture attached)? Attachments:

Thanks for your reply tomkauf. Mine is a model DJ4-S. I have the Japanese drive recorder manual and yes thought about using Google Translate although this will be time consuming (I did also try to find an English version of the manual on eBay to no avail, despite success in securing an English Owners Manual for the vehicle). I have removed the SD card from the unit as the Japanese lady said something every time I switched the car on and while this was quite cute, as I use the vehicle to teach learner drivers, thought it didn't sound all that professional!

No problem lorry. I just saw your post in this thread. I googled the DJ4-S and it looks basically the same as mine. Mine might actually be that same one, but I don't see a model written on mine. With the lady speaking, you probably have an ETC Reader (not related to the drive recorder). That is what speaks Japanese in my Leaf. My drive recorder does not speak, but the round speaker for the ETC system is near the drive recorder. It's the Electronic Toll Collection system in Japan. Do you have something like the picture below, with a card slot? Mine is above my knee in the driver's footwell. But if the japanese voice is now silent after removing the SD Card, maybe there was an issue with it. Try formatting the Card in eg. a Laptop, or try another SD Card. I'm not sure what the maximum supported size is - it may be pretty small compared to modern SD Card sizes. But the drive recorder functions are: Light on the left shows when it is powered on. Light on the right shows whether sound recording is turned on or off. Button on the left with the Microphone symbol toggles sound recording on/off. Toggles if you just want video recording, or sound as well. Button on the right with the Camera symbol takes a still image (picture). Button underneath turns the dashcam on/off (if I remember correctly). If it's on, it'll come back on every time power is restored. And I think it also has a motion/sound detection when parked, since it's hard-wired into the car. I've had it trigger when I've walked in front of the car, or slammed the door hard. Attachments:
