I'm finding it hard to justify $40k for a "new" 2012 Leaf. I can pick up a second hand one for about $30k with only 12,000klm on it which seems more reasonable but there's one minor detail: Every Leaf for sale second hand is in NSW or VIC. At least on CarSales. Any other ideas (other than flying down and back and putting the Leaf on a truck back home) about where to find second hand Leafs in SE Qld?

Hi John, welcome to the forum. Some owners were able to buy new for as low as $35k, is that within budget? Maybe try checking with QLD dealers and see if they can sell you one for a good price including shipping one interestate? There are a few active QLD owners here who might recommend a dealer to you.

If you purchase from another state, check on the registration expenses, as I had one owner pay it in NSW, then pay it again for QLD.

I got mine new from Moorooka Nissan for $35k back in September. Ask for John or Ed and tell them "Jeff sent me":-). I have driven my LEAF SE Qld to NSW and back twice and also, recently SE Qld to Victoria (I am now at Nullarbor Roadhouse:-). If you have the time, it takes me 4 overnights to get one back from Sydney. This is my LEAF this morning. After 143.9km and 300m short of Nullarbor Roadhouse. Note the energy economy of 0.11 kWh/km for this leg (enlarge image). Next leg is 185km where I will definitely need the genny. Attachments:

I got my Leaf for $29900 from WA and they shipped it to Victoria free. It had done 6,000k when I bought it. Now has 20,000k. Still have all 12 bars.

How long did that take? And how many people in those remote parts have ever seen an EV? You are a trailblazer Jeff!

Now that is something I've never seen before!! Did you turtle it? Did you put just enough juice in it to get you to the roadhouse? How long did that take? And how many people in those remote parts have ever seen an EV? Yep. Totally turtled it. Got the flashing dash at 8km GOM. Then crawled at 40k/h till the nice lady told me the motor power was now restricted (I thought I would actually see a picture of a turtle:-(. At this stage I had the Nullarbor Roadhouse visual at several hundred meters (measured later at 700). Turtle mode didn't restrict my speed as I was already at 40k/h trying to humour it along. But, turtle then gave out after a few 100 meters by dropping the "gearshift" into 'N'. LEAF Spy told me I had 0.2kWh remaining. My side of the road had a narrow shoulder, just enough to be off the bitumen but I saw a wider bit of shoulder on the right hand side so I crossed over and stopped there. I was in phone range for the first time for a while so I made some calls and also took some in. An hour went very quickly so I upped anchor with 9km in the tank and strolled easily into the Roadhouse. Almost none have seen an EV. Almost all don't even know about them. However, most here are travelers from major population centres to the usual rules apply. Sitting in the bar here (drinking squash) I struck up conversation with a yank who had a LEAF on lease for several years! Daily update on facebook.com/jeffthewalker

Hey John, I bought my Leaf from Von Bibra Southport new for $35k April 2015. The deal was I had to have it in their name for 3 months so they could have it listed as their demo car (so they didn't have to have one). Not sure if I would recommend them... The car though listed as new and only had about 50kms on the clock so was obviously not stored properly as the battery is not the best.. Lost its first 'bar' at 6500km while the rest of Australia seems to have averaged 30000km. All Australian Leafs were imported in 2012 and what few new Leafs remain have been stored somewhere for 3 years..I don't know where or how mine was stored. If I had this knowledge before buying I would look into getting a Leaf that has been stored in a cool climate - not Qld! Temp seems to be the killer for Li ion battery longevity.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone - much appreciated. To be honest I find it frustrating only having one dealer to deal with when they wouldn't compromise on the price. It was John at Moorooka Nissan (the only Nissan dealer in QLD that stocks/services the Leaf) that was part of my frustration with buying a new one through them. Either way though, even if I get one second hand, I'll STILL have to deal with them since they're the only place I can take it to get serviced.
Looking at the second hand cars on CarSales they've dwindled from 9 to only 4 today and I suspect the available inventory in Australia must be either about to finally expire or has expired. Either way, they will become harder to find. At this stage I'm considering just keeping my ICE car for another 6-9 months and waiting for the 2016 Leaf in Q1 2017, which is apparently when they're coming? Don't know if that's true. If it is true, Nissan wouldn't advertise it because that would kill the value of their remaining 2012 stock they're trying to clear.
At this point the only way I'm getting a 2012 Leaf is second hand and probably from interstate. Oh well.

Though I haven't had a major service yet - just the 10,000 service. But as you would be aware EVs don't need much servicing - since there is very little wear and tear on the engine relative to an ICE... as someone on here said it's like servicing a blender - only one moving part. Servicing an EV is mostly about aircon, tyres and maybe a software update.
