Last Saturday night I had to pick up a friend from Sydney Airport who had just arrived from London. Jumped in Twiggy who said she had 132 klms on the good old GOS and I checked the trip which was 110 klms return so my wife and I thought fine we have a safe margin of around 20% so off we went.Well to cut a long story short, with about 5klms to go we got the"pull over immediately" message. So I grabbed the number for Nissan Roadside and called to advise the nice lady of my predicament, mind you this was around 9:50 pm. The nice lady had never heard of the Leaf. I then advised that I was aware that Nissan had a roadside charging vehicle that could give you a short boost to enable you to go those few extra klms which would of got me home. She was not aware of this and said she would send a patrolman out, I did tell her that unless he had a charging unit he would be unable to assist, never the less she sent him out. This nice gentleman also had never heard of a Leaf and was quite impressed but of course unable to help. I directed him to the NRMA website which boasted having this charging vehicle. He made some calls and eventually discovered that there is a charging vehicle in Sydney sponsored by Nissan but it it is not available 24/7 and the best he could do was order a tow truck. Well I popped my wife and friend into a cab and waited for the tow truck. Apart from knowing I should not have trusted the GOM I am a bit miffed that Nissan roadside do not make the charging vehicle available 24/7. The patrolman said that if the vehicle was located say at their facility at North Strathfield a patrolman could easily pick it up from there and be able to get to most of greater Sydney to be able to assist in such circumstance. We really are not looked after on many issues and apart from being early adopters I think we are often lone rangers as well

Until service of that sort is improved you need to leave a larger margin than that. Just go up one steep hill and a whole chunk of GOM is gobbled up

Oh dear. Was your friend from London understanding, annoyed, or mocking? Luckily we've never been remotely close to running out of juice, but we haven't really pushed it.

That sort of scenario worries me a lot but I have only been driving the car a week. Today I returned home from teaching and wondered if I should charge before I went into the city for a rehearsal that night. It would have been tight so I decided to charge for 2 hours. I don't think I would have made it home otherwise, although there was still 30km on the GOM when I got home.

Actually I think they should based the calculations on the average power consumption. That would surely give a more accurate figure than what it does now. It actually evaluates too often and ends up going up and down wildly.

ABC - Always be charging I have never run out, but been pretty close a few times You will be amazed how far the car will go when doing 30-40km/h ish on a side road in an emergency. I have noticed the 10km on the GOM stays for a long time.

The charger trailer does exist it comes out with the NRMA i-miev for shows and promos. I assumed it lived somewhere in Sydney, I guess why it's not available 24/7 is how nrma do call outs, the particular dispatch center it lives at wasn't on duty at the time. tow truck to the fast charger probably would be a faster solution than charging at 15amps on the side of the road.

That's sad to hear their service was so poor! Does Dean need to be informed so they can give the call centre staff a clue?
The extra passengers and weight might have reduced range too, I almost got caught short once with three passengers and hilly terrain. Ended up finding a business centre car park with a powerpoint. Yes it was stealing, no it's something I'm not proud of. At least we got the passengers home before making a beeline for the quickcharger.

...Jumped in Twiggy who said she had 132 klms on the good old GOS... I thought that's just my Leaf GOM. I found they are incredibly inaccurate during high SoC (over-estimate). So, everytime my GoM reports 100km and above, I usually ignore them (assume 110 is top value) .

You could always try this, youtu.be/5Sujv90PLLY You just need to get your tow truck driver to get you on a freeway at 80km/h for a bit...

Did you see at the end that 8km of towing increased the GOM from 42 to 73 (but added only 1 bar of battery). I reckon the GOM algorithm would get very tricked in a scenario like that.

Scrap the charging vehicle. To me it is a waste of money. Better just to tow (on a tray) to a charging point or to home. It would be quicker (if taken to where you were going) than waiting for the charging vehicle to charge up your vehicle. And you can get tow trucks all around the country.
