Firstly, I want to point out this was nothing like my idea. I have shamelessly stolen it from the US Leaf forums, with some minor adjustments to suit the Oz market. The original thread is here: www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=2502&hilit=port+light
Anyway, this DIY light is about adding a simple, motion sensing light that will turn on when you approach the open charge port cover. It is cheap and very simply effective.
1/ Pick up one of these. I got mine from the local bunnings for $14
They come with a small magnet in the pack, it is designed to stick to the car via the supplied glued side, and the magnet links to the back of the case. Due to the curve of the port cover I did not think it was adequate to hold it.
2/ I grabbed a rare earth magnet from eBay. I bought these because they were the right size, shape and price (and BTW I have 4 spares if anyone wants to follow this guide) www.ebay.com.au/itm/180900623177?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
BTW these magnets are genuinely super strong. They are hard to seperate from each other. Don't stick it to something unless you want frustrating work removing it again!
3/ From here it gets deceptively simple. Check which side of the magnet sticks to the rear cover of the light. Stick the opposite side to the middle of the charge port
4/ Set the light to 60seconds (switch inside the battery section) and attach it to the magnet. Yes it is that easy. It will be a secure but removable fit
The light does not foul on the charger or stop the lid closing, but if you did ever have an issue it is easily removable from the magnet
5/ The LEDs themselves can swivel, aim them downwards.
Enjoy the light when plugging in
