A couple of things on which I couldn't get clarification -
1. What the battery level inducator was really showing and 2. What the large gismo near the centre rear view mirror does
The ever helpful Dean Despotovski has supplied the answers, with my comments in italics -
Q 1. The battery indicator shows the percentage of voltage left. But be aware that this does not necessarily indicate kWhrs, i.e. the real 'grunt' left in the batteries. As I've said previously, 2 x 12 volt batteries can each indicate up to 14 volts with no load ( i.e. 100+ percent of voltage) but one will have the 'grunt' to start an I.C.E. car, whilst the other won't.
Q 2. The largish gismo on the windscreen is the window wipers sensor for the auto wiper function in the LEAF has. My wife reports that sometimes this gets over-excited and activates the wipers on ' start up ', when there is no rain or moisture

The other day my windscreen wipers got so excited on start up on a sunny day that they started working and didn't stop and I had to turn them off manually. I haven't turned them on since.

Ours do a phantom wiper sweep once in a while. They never stay on, usually just one cycle.

I've now found the adjustment for auto windscreen wipers so hope fully I can control them in future
