I and my LEAF live in Victoria. I currently have comprehensive insurance with Coles Car Insurance. My renewal date is 25.6.14. I'm wondering if Ozleaf members can suggest other insurance companies who offer competitive premiums EVs.

It partly depends on what the company will insure you LEAF for. I couldn't get mine reduced from $51,000 until the 3rd year.

I work for and insure through Comminsure and even without the staff discount I believe we are quite competitive, best way to check them all out is on the web, most companies quote on line and are even cheaper on line rather than the quote you receive over the phone

Oooh... I paid $774 with AAMI (NSW). The default insured value was $51,500 and I have $625 excess. And that was the best deal I could find. I got some quotes over $1000.

It was $100+ less than the other company I was with. It is only insured for 40k and a $500 excess. RAC have special deals for efficient vehicles.

rac.com.au/news-community/environment/eco-driving-tipsIn the video it says 25% off comprehensive car insurance for LEMs When I changed from blue motion golf to volt I got a refund. Couldn't believe it. Cos volt cost $60k vs golf $30k There are discounts for new cars as well though.

We haven't purchased a Leaf yet but prior to this we had been insured with RAC since I was 17 then we did some research and found out that they were shafting us and now we are insured with HBF heaps cheaper

This thread hasn’t been posted to in 7 years 😱
I have had my LEAF insured with AAMI since I bought it, but my Tesla is insured with APIA, who easily gave the best deal. So I thought I’d get a quote from them - but incredibly after filling in the details, the quote form came back saying “We cannot offer you insurance based on the nominated vehicle”.
Wow, never seen that before, so I restarted the process just to check, and instead of looking up the vehicle by rego plate I manually selected the vehicle and sure enough, the LEAF is not listed as a Nissan model that can be selected for insurance with APIA.
I tried a couple of others like NRMA and they still insure the LEAF but the quotes were higher than AAMI’s.
The other problem is the alleged “market value” is only $13,100 and the maximum value the online forms allow us to insure for (with any insurer I tried) is $17,030 which is ridiculous, mostly because we have a new battery installed last year that cost $10,000. Even on carsales, 2012-2014 LEAFs are being advertised for $20k - $22k and I bet those ones don’t have a new battery in them.
I’ll have to see if we can manually get the “agreed value” increased to around $25k by ringing them up, but this does highlight an issue the insurance industry has not yet had to come to terms with - an “upgrade” to a vehicle which costs a significant proportion of the value of the vehicle. That basically just does not happen with ICE, what upgrade could you make to an 8-year old ICE vehicle that would increase its value by $10k?
But a new battery in an EV fundamentally changes its value by a huge amount!
I’ll report back…

That's nuts! Who there decides these figures? Any way to dispute or escalate it?

That's nuts! Who there decides these figures? Any way to dispute or escalate it? Well, I rang AAMI up and after patient but insistent discussion on the situation, the person I was talking to finally agreed to get supervisor permission to increase the maximum insured value to… $18.1k. I was quietly fuming by this point but I had little choice but to accept it as the best I was ever going to get.
