In my browsing, I came across this: www.gelcoservices.com.au/gelco_electric_vehicle.htmTheir prices for wall-mounted Aeroenvironment EVSEs are eye-watering, but I'm interested in this: Whoops, tech issue, it is too tiny, but this is a: "GS1013 Floating Cable YM10 i-MiEV NEW This replacement cable is assembled to be compliant with Australian Wiring Rules and incorporates a SAE J1772 AC plug for the vehicle. The plug has a weather protection cover. The cable length is 5.0metres. The cable has been Tested and Tagged for compliance. $312.00 inc. GST – ex stock " I've emailed them, and they say it has a 15 amp plug, and has been used with a Leaf by some of their customers. I'm finding getting the EVSE in and out of my boot each day to charge in the carport a bit of a pain, and think this might make a good alternative, that could be left plugged in. Has anyone got one of these?

I'd be curious to know how well that works because I thought the earlier model i-MiEV didn't communicate in full J1772 so that cable might not be compatible with the LEAF. Gabz here might know more about it. Another option is to get a Holden Volt EVSE which has a RRP of $350. That's what I've got and it works well for me. It charges about as fast as the OEM EVSE: ozleaf.proboards.com/post/2143/thread

Hi Feng, Looked at that Volt EVSE post - is that a 10amp power point it uses? The control/brick looks quite large. The Gelco one doesn't appear to have a brick, from what I can tell from the pic. That is an interesting point about the I-Miev communication in J1772, I hope that someone here knows more than me.

Yes it's a 10A plug. We were doing the same thing as you for the first few months. Having it wall mounted makes a world of difference. It's large but it's made for winding the cord around.

It doesn't have a brick because 2010 i-meiv don't have a brick... it also won't work on any other car except an 2010 I-meiv sorry. the early I-mievs used a J1772 plug but not the smarts behind it.

That's not good news. My husband inquired via email, and they said that they'd had Leaf customers purchase it, so I'm a bit puzzled. Thanks for the reply.

I wonder if it has the resistor set for the j1772 10amp, but not the safety switch part?

Thanks for the reply. not sure if you do buy it make sure he has a returns policy the description seems to imply is a it's for a 2010 imiev "YM10 i-MiEV" and it's what they use.

Today I rang my local Holden, they got a Volt EVSE up from Brisbane, and I picked it up this afternoon, $350, happy to have a second EVSE. Tried it out this afternoon, and it worked fine, now just need to mount it on the wall. Thanks for the advice, Gabzmiev and Feng.

Awesome, you'll be wondering why you didn't do it sooner!

Yes, I didn't realise how annoying I'd find getting the EVSE in and out of the boot to be, particularly when rushing off to work.
I was also thinking about the wall-mounted option, so as to be able to access off-peak KwH, but decided that it is hard to justify the purchase/installation for a charger that I'd only be able to use during the off-peak times. I might look at it again a little later - with electricity being deregulated in July in Qld, I'm not sure what will happen with the tariffs. There is some talk of introducing time-of-use tariffs. I don't think the electricity companies have quite caught up with EV charging - it is in their interests for people to recharge late at night to minimise strain on the grid, but by only allowing access to off-peak rates through a hard-wired charger, this creates the inconvenience of not being able to use the equipment at other times.

buzz no, high pitched whine yes. Those noises are from the switch mode power supply so there is a converter from 240VAC to 12VDC to do the signalling. normally you get them on under loaded switch modes or faulty ones. does it change noise when plugged into the car ? maybe it's poor design from the 60Hz USA models to the 50Hz Australian model.

I have my LEAF EVSE mounted on the wall of my garage and while I can get it on and off easily, it's a pain in the neck. So I thought I might get another one to leave at work in case I'm caught short (like today!). But not at Nissan's prices!!!!!!!

Hi Rrosco, I've only used it a few times so far, but Feng has been happily using his for a while. It has a 10 amp plug, but can be plugged into a 15 amp power point, so that is an advantage over the Leaf EVSE as far as being able to use it elsewhere without needing an adaptor. So go for it, as convenience is king. I'm also going to feel a bit more relaxed just knowing that I have two EVSEs, should one get lost or malfunction.
