The recent NZ charger network article got me thinking ...
1. As LEAF owners we have paid a premium for a car that is one of future options for personal mobility 2. We know that charging at home is the main option for most LEAF owners 3. We also know that more fast chargers in a suitable locations enable longer journeys.....and make EV's more practical for extended journeys 4. Are current LEAF owners willing to chip-in for well placed & useful fast chargers 5. Location owners such as travel stops / petrol stations with large forecourts that sell food drink are potential spots for fast chargers
Q1 .Site selection - are there obvious sites for fast chargers around Melbourne ? My suggestions (as an eastern suburbs LEAFer) :
1. On / close to Philip Island - enable the Melbourne to Philip Island journey for EV's 2. Nr Geelong - opens up the potential for Great Ocean Road for EV's
Q2. is it worth trying a stint on a crowd funding site (www.indiegogo.com) to reach a sum that would enable a fast charger (e.g. Veefil) to be provided to a potential site owner to be installed (at their cost)
I imagine that site operators would be prepared to fund the install cost if the larger cost of sourcing the charger is provided by this group ?
Do you agree - is it worth a go ?
I figure that if we can move on the fast charger network even a little bit - it builds more impetus.....

How much? Who pays on going costs and admin time? Do we restrict use to only those who chipped in?

I have been installing level 2 chargers as they are cheap. You will need about $30k for a veefil, plus installation and commissioning, plus a good site that has the power available (the units can be software power limited where needed).

so you need 100amps at 415Volts spare capacity for a 50KW charger you budget around $10k for install and $30k for the charger.
Level 2s start at $1000 and you budget $300-$500 for install.
unless you already have a super keen site owner looking to upgrade from a level 2 you mainly get bogged down with find a spot with sufficient power.
Saying that if there is a Oliver real food near any of the locations your looking at initial discussions I’ve had with them seem positive.

I'm not saying it can't be done more I think the harder problem is finding a suitable site/owner/strata approval over finding the money for the fast charger.
best to approach the councils first they seem the most receptive.
