Just got this email from Nissan. All good things must come to an end:
Dear Nissan LEAF owner, As a valued Nissan LEAF customer, Nissan would like to advise you of the upcoming end to the CARWINGS communication module that has been available with your Nissan LEAF.
As part of purchasing a ZE0 Nissan LEAF, and as communicated in the materials provided at the time of purchase, the subscription to CARWINGS was provided by Nissan at no cost for the first three years. This subscription enabled you to utilise your mobile phone to access some of the functions and information of your Nissan LEAF. Some of these functions included the ability to check the battery charge, the estimated driving range, as well as adjusting the climate control.
As a goodwill gesture, Nissan has continued to cover the cost of this subscription past the first three years, however we advise that both the subscription and the service itself will come to an end on 30th September 2021.
The end of the CARWINGS communication module will not have any impact on the functions available within your Nissan LEAF. All of the features and functions that you were able to access and control via the mobile phone application will continue to be available within the EV infotainment menu.
On behalf of Nissan Australia, we thank you for choosing Nissan and wish you many happy years of motoring with your Nissan LEAF. If you have any queries, please contact the Nissan Customer Service Centre on 1800 035 035 and select Nissan Motor Company (option 2 then option 4).

Oh 🙄. That has to be annoying for a lot of people. I never had Carwings, so I'm not affected, but it still seems unfair for Nissan to discontinue this service.

I'm not complaining after getting so many years of a free service. I would have paid for it if I had the opportunity.

Well, I better get cracking downloading all my Carwings stats then, I’ve downloaded them every 6 months since I got the car. There was a gap in data collection for about 3 months, between Telstra turning GSM (2G) off in December 2016 and Nissan replacing the TCU with a 3G version, Then another gap last year when I just forgot to download the data for a couple of months

I'm curious about this as an aftermarket replacement: www.openvehicles.com/It might do most of the functions of Carwings and more.

There is no GSM (2G) in Australia any more, so none of the 2G options will work. I’d go for the US edition here, because it supports 3G on the 850 MHz band (Telstra). But note, Telstra is closing 3G in June 2024, so less than 3 years away now. The EU edition supports 3G on 900 MHz and 2100MHz. I understand 3G has closed on 2100 MHz for all carriers in Australia now, but is still active on 900 MHz with Optus and Vodafone. But of course their coverage is not as good as Telstra’s.

If anyone ends up getting this, let us know (features, how much etc). But yeah, as EVangelist said, the cellular connection is important to check. Crazy that 3G is getting shut down in 2024, I didn't know.

Carwings seems to have died a couple of weeks ago, and the telemetry on September 3.
I tried logging into Carwings a few weeks ago (from the AU Nissan Leaf Owners Portal) to download my trip data but it said “The service cannot be provided”. That is still the case today. I emailed Nissan a couple of weeks ago seeking further information about the demise of Carwings, they said they would look into it and get back to me, but I have received nothing further.
Next to go was the Owners Portal. Now logging into there, and selecting the “my vehicles” tab results in an empty page that says “There is no current vehicle data to display”. That was not the case 2 weeks ago.
The last thing to go appears to be the reporting of battery status by the car. Opening the Nissan EV app, it shows the battery status after charging finished on our car at 01:02 on 3 September. Attempting to refresh the battery status results in a spinning circle that times out after 5 minutes with the error message “The service cannot be provided. Please try again or contact Nissan”.
What an ignominious death. Vale Carwings. Even though you never worked very well, and went offline for months at a time, and no-one at Nissan seemed to care about you whatsoever, it was a glimpse into the future of car connectivity. At least Tesla understands such connectivity is a core part of its motor vehicle offering, and not some underfunded side-project that no-one cares about.

Carwings seems to have died... Sad to see. On a technical note, what is the recommended way of stopping problems arising from the now-useless telematics computer? Can it just be unplugged, or will that cause errors to be lodged? I ask especially since the last 2 times I tried to charge my Leaf, nothing happened. The first time, I was able to reset some codes and get a charge, but the second time, I didn't have either of my OBD2 dongles with me. So I had to change plans and go home (with my suddenly low and erratic range). I think that the errors were caused by my resetting the TCU by pulling its fuse, so maybe I can reset it once and just leave it. But it would be nice to have the TCU draw zero power from the auxiliary battery, yet not have errors generated.

But it would be nice to have the TCU draw zero power from the auxiliary battery, yet not have errors generated. Same worry here. I hope the clock will still work once the whole thing no longer supported. When I reset mine years ago (by pulling fuse out), it took couple of hours for it to come back. While the clock not showing up, I couldn't set the timed charger. So, my guess, the clock synchronization works the same way like our mobile phone which requires 3G service (except it's 4G/5G for phones). Also, this morning (5th Sept), the map updated itself with charger locations, which is unexpected considering the telematics service now stopped (mine stopped working since January, except trip data).

the map updated itself with charger locations, which is unexpected Last night, I pressed "update locations" or whatever to see what sort of error message would come up. I was surprised to see that it updated, and added about 9 locations (near current location, which was home). Perhaps reports of the Telematics death have been exaggerated?

Getting that same email from Nissan Australia is ominous though. I haven't dared to disconnect any fuse (or even change my original 12V battery since conception), due to the potential issue with the TCU clock can't sync anymore with the server. As I really need the timed charger for my 'canary' pack (so I can charge to 60 ~ 70% SoC).

"Connection to the centre has failed". This is it. This is the official end to an era. Carwing is officially kaput. Even 'Traffic Information' no longer works. My RSS feeds no longer updated as well (gosh, who use them anyway? )

It’s a shame that Nissan seem to think App connectivity for their cars is not completely central to their ecosystem, but some kind of geeky indulgence that is expendable.
