I have had my 2012 Leaf for a year now and love everything about it. Western Australia has had a tough financial year and I was surprised to get a $820 annual registration for my vehicle. Has this gone up in WA to pay off debt or is this the recoup for raod use they cannot get from fuel excise? how does this compare in WA and other states? thanks for any information

Do we have another WA Leaf owner who can do a comparison? I looked at www.transport.wa.gov.au/licensing/renew-replace-my-vehicle-licence.asp and it appears that a vehicles weight can affect the registration fee, and EVs are heavy because of the batteries. Do query it. As far as fuel excise goes (about 40c per litre), it goes to the federal govt, and certainly doesn't all go to roads. There are so few EVs on Australian roads that they haven't really had an impact on this tax revenue. More fuel-efficient cars do have an impact, but are possibly offset by the Australian love of gas/diesel-guzzling SUVs.

I don't have my Leaf any more but I can tell you that from August 2016 to 2017 rego went from $755 to $786. My I-miev rego has gone from $653, August 2016, to $701, August 2018. My Volt has gone from $700, January 2016, to $796, January 2017. It went to $829, July 2017, and is now $861, July 2018. Needless to say I pay regos three or six monthly now.

I forgot to add that WA put up insurance premium part of rego July 2016 so that accounts for that big bump but they increase premiums each July regardless. Not good for the poor worker who hasn't had a pay increase or me who's been out of work for over four years.
