Ausgrid have informed me that any device can be attached to an off-peak meter as long as it is signed off by the installer. The sparky fills in the paperwork and sends it to Ausgrid. This means that an EV charging station can be connected to the off peak meter circuit with the obvious caveat that it will not be powered up outside the off-peak period.

Good news.
You also have the option to a "smart" meter to get similar prices for all appliances including the charger at certain times of day. A few people on here including me are running through these

Yeah, got ours when our solar panels went on the roof.
LEAF charging always starts at 1am.

But, if your LEAF charger allways starts at 1am, Jim, you are certainly not charging off your solar panels. I charge in the middle of the day to charge off my solar panels - at least I use everything the panels are giving me. I wasn't offered different prices at different times of the day on my 'smart' meter. Iwas told by Ausgrid that because I have solar panels I have to pay 25 c per kwh for all that I draw from the grid, I couldn't have the cheaper price at night.

I guess it depends on the feed in tariff you have. For me I signed up for my solar with the premium tariff which gives me .66c per kwh I feed in during the day. This tariff is no longer available here in Victoria. And my off peak rate at night is only .14c per kwh which included the 100% green power fee so my LEAF alway charges in the car too. I just set the finish timer for 4.30am so it's ready for any early starts I might have.

Phoebe, we run two businesses from home and you've personally seen how big our place is. Unfortunately we pretty much exhaust our 6.25Kw system, maybe getting $100/month from feeding the grid rare bits we don't use up. So charging the car during off peak at 1/5 the peak rate makes a lot of sense to us. Would love a 15Kw system on the roof. Maybe if we installed it today we could get that for the price we paid, but a couple of years in I'm glad we bit the bullet when we did...

Leafboi, I only get 8 cents per kwh for what I feed into the grid and I have to pay almost 25 cents per kwh for all of what I draw from the grid - not a very good deal at all, which is why I make sure I use as much of my solar power as possible. Yes Jim, I understand your situation, I guess it's partly a feel good thing to know I am powering my LEAF with solar
