Feng and Jim are off to Japan for the launch of the new LEAF!Nissan Australia are bringing a group of key personnel to Japan for the launch, among them a couple of original LEAF owners. Feng and I have both maintained close ties with Nissan over the years and are very excited to be selected. We’ll attend the launch as well as get a rare tour of the Oppama plant. Very exciting for both of us and a big thanks to Nissan Australia for inviting us along! Needless to say we’ll be making a full report so watch for it after the event. All the best,
Feng & Jim

Sometimes it still doesn't feel real and I don't think that feeling will go away until we're seated and departing!
I wish there could be more of us going and will do my best to represent us. I'll also resist bombarding poor staff with questions but will obviously try to find out more while we're there.

Are there any rules or an embargo on what you're allowed to report before the offical reveal? Really keen to know what size battery the new leaf will offer.

They certainly aren't revealing any secrets to us before the launch so you'll know the moment we do. I'm guessing it will be live streamed or at least all the specs posted as soon as the launch occurs.

Feels like a turning point for electric cars with the model 3 and now gen 2 leaf coming out. Have a blast and go Aus.

What a fantastic opportunity. Enjoy. Please find out as much as you can about the specifics for Australia, models, options, range, Carwings (cough) etc... Maybe even updated Satnav maps....

Will do. Even though the trip is about the new model I'll discretely get as much info about what's in store for us. I'm not planning to upgrade so I'm as interested as everyone else here!

I do hope Nissan Australia don't think they will get away with not releasing the Leaf here for retail ( as opposed to fleet ) sale. Please press them on this, availability is the biggest issue for EVs in Aus and the manufacturers, including Nissan are not helping

Can I drop off a couple of battery pack sized sized suit cases at your house? (you maybe need to start going to the gym, I mean lithium is a light metal but 48 modules sort of add up)

The launch is today I believe? Not much information has leaked about the new Leaf. There have been some spy shots, teaser photos released by Nissan, but not a lot in the way of specs. It will be interesting to finally see all the details and whether Nissan Australia will make any announcement about local release.

Launch was awesome, so great to be in the room!
Main differences 400k range, autonomous drive, auto park, new centre console display with Apple integration.
And single pedal drive option.
All in all very attractive!

Looks nice up close. Any impressions/images of the interior space and boot? Does it feel like there is more interior space compared to the original Leaf?

Cabin feels the same size, some of the switchgear, door panels and HVAC controls are straight from our car. Boot is slightly bigger because it doesn't have the hump from the charger. Like the upgraded gen 1 LEAF.
It's like if ours was LEAF 1.0 and the updated gen 1 is LEAF 1.2, this is more LEAF 1.8 instead of LEAF 2.0.

...this is more LEAF 1.8 instead of LEAF 2.0. Aaargh, dang it! I wish I haven't seen the concept model. I was kind of expecting this: instead of this: Anyhoo, I should stick to my utilitarian principle!

Time flies, it's been a month already. Here are some photos from the trip I've been meaning to put up. The first night when we all arrived. We had a late dinner at a restaurant where Peter Jones from Nissan talked to us and a few journos about the significance of Nissan Casting Australia behind manufacturing components for various Nissan cars including the LEAF. The following day we were shuttled to an exhibition centre where they packed us into our seats to view a stage where they presented the new LEAF. There was an impressive driving demonstration mixed with CGI and lasers, followed by a few speeches. There were over 500 attendees, and that was just for our session. I can't remember the exact figure, Jim might. After the stage presentation we were routed to a separate area of the centre where they had a couple of new LEAFs along with a few other exhibitions on display.
