This may be "old" news for some, but Elon Musk has announced the Tesla Model 3 will be launched on 31 March, with deposits (USD1000) being accepted from 1 April for delivery mid-late 2017.
What's not clear yet is whether in RHD markets like Australia deposits will be taken for the Model 3 on the same date, and if so what the figure will be and whether the delivery date will be later than for the LHD markets. One would assume it would be later, 6 months or more.
I guess we will find out in about 3 weeks. Depending on the specs, appearance of the car (obviously) and timing of RHD version for Australia, I will be very tempted to put a deposit down.
My understanding is the deposits are non-refundable. You either buy the car, or wave goodbye to your one grand.

Very interesting, looking forward to it! Unless they can give you a final price, which I'd doubt they will, I don't see how the deposit could be non-refundable. Guess we'll find out soon. Any guesses on local price? If they are saying US$35k do you think they will be $80k here? Any guesses on local price? If they are saying US$35k do you think they will be $80k here? As far as I know, Tesla didn't mark up their price but LCT made it very expensive. With LCT threshold for fuel efficient cars is now $75,375, I believe basic Tesla Model 3 won't touch the threshold. I just wonder when we will see one driving in Australia.

I certainly hope you're right! The LEAF listed for about US$28k and listed for almost double that here. Was certainly in the high $50s by the time the first of us got off the lot. I agree it probably won't hit the LCT threshold but I still think it will list for over $70k here. If it comes out at $50k then I'll be first in line again! ;-) Any guesses on local price? When Tesla announced they were coming to Australia, they indicated they wanted the base Model S to be under AUD 100k. But that was when we were just below USD parity. I think the base model S is now around $125k drive-away. With AUD now at 0.7 or thereabouts, I predict the drive-away cost here will be about double the US list price. So my current estimate is around AUD $70k. That's certainly near the top end of what I would ever want to spend on a car, but I would do it for Tesla

Tesla has announced more details of the Model 3 launch which most of you have probably already seen. Reservations will start in-store from store opening time on Thu 31 March globally. That means Australians will be the first in the world (apart from Tesla employees) to be able to put down a deposit, due to our time zone advantage. There are no Tesla stores further east than ours. The downside is RHD markets will be the last to ship in the world, probably not until Q2 2018. So that's a 2 year wait, folks. The Sydney store at St Leonards ordinarily has the earliest opening time of 8am, but it seems the Melbourne service centre is also opening at 8am just for the occasion. Brisbane has to wait until 9am, which due to daylight saving still being in operation in NSW and Vic, means that Brisbane will in fact be 2 hours behind the other cities. The deposit will be A$1500 and is refundable if you decide later to not proceed (provided you haven't got to the specification stage when cars are entering production). Online reservations won't open until the car is unveiled in LA, which is 2:30 pm AEDST on Friday 1st April, some 30 hours after in-store reservations open here. It will be very interesting to see if people line up at the stores ahead of opening, like iPhone launches in the old days. I've decided to put down a deposit. Nothing to lose, really. So I might see some of you at St Leonards early on Thursday morning

Speculation on the Tesla forum has the pricing estimates at around $63,000-65,000 for the base model (the $35,000 US retail price one). There will be options for it that will take the price up from that. Since they've talked about it directly competing with the BMW 3 series that's kind of around that price range.
The US gives $7500 tax credit though so it's a $28,500 car there. Unfortunately nothing like that here. So it's $35,000 US plus shipping, stamp duty ect for a drive away of maybe $63,000 for the small battery one. Model 3 70D? Go for the bigger battery, plus sunroof, plus sound pack and some options and you could hit the $100,000 mark. Fully spec'd cars will be delivered first according to Tesla.

Yes Model 3 won't be "cheap" but it still might be very good, superb even, and far better than any competitors which might come along in the next 2 years. I would go for a long range battery, but I don't need or want "ludicrous" mode, or sunroof, or leather seats, or premium sound system, or any other party tricks not essential to normal driving. I would pay for access to superchargers, if as is rumoured they won't be included for free for Model 3. And in 2 years' time some enlightenment might even reach governments here and some concessions for EVs might be implemented, or the exchange rate might be back to parity. Who knows? But I'm not banking on that. And if a competing EV does come along in the next 2 years that beats the Model 3, I withdraw my deposit from Tesla and buy that instead. Easy.

I'll be paying my Model 3 deposit in store on Thursday. Happy to support Tesla. Continuing to be underwhelmed by Nissan's lack of EV commitment in Oz.

The first person is already camped at the Sydney store... I'll be getting there not long before opening, but I have no idea whether the queue will be 20, 200, or 2000. I need to be at work by 10am so I am taking a bit of a punt by my relatively casual approach. Anything more than about 100 people and I might have to abort.

And your bank is paying exceptional interest... my transaction account pays 0.01%. I am not making that up. So I literally have nothing to lose transferring $1500 to the Tesla zero-interest account.

I drove past the Sydney store on my way home from work tonight, and at 7pm there were only 2 people camped outside, with one of the Tesla showroom staff having a chat to them. So unless people were having din-dins first before going down, or planning to get up in the middle of the night, it would seem I won't be confronted with a queue of 200 people in the morning. But you never know. I'll report back when I get there in the morning

Looks like an Apple product launch. Did you find any other LEAF owners in the queue? No Leaf owners that I talked to, but it seemed about half of them already owned a Model S. The five supercharger bays were all in use and the rest of the visitor parking was full of Model Ss. I talked to the guy behind me about the Leaf, he had heard of it but didn't know much about it. He was interested in how I charge it, range, regeneration etc. He owned a fully optioned-up Model S. I told him I was here because the Leaf converted me to EVs. He was a total EV convert, says all of his friends are speechless after he gives them a test drive. Tesla ran the show this morning really well. They were handing out muffins and taking coffee orders for everyone in the queue. The line moved well once the store opened, and about 50 people joined the queue while I was waiting. Reservation was done online with an iMac, it took only a minute (first try didn't work - I then remembered I had to unblock my credit card for international online purchases ). I was out of the store at 8:50, photo below was taken just on 9am, still about 20 lined up. I think they will easily do 150 reservations today at the Sydney store. Add in Melbourne and Brisbane stores, and they'll probably have more Model 3 reservations in 24 hours than there are Leafs in Australia. That is quite amazing! Now I just have to wait 2 years Attachment Deleted

When I reserved instore yesterday, the sales rep said allow 24 hours for the email to arrive. It actually arrived the same minute but the Tesla servers would have been very quiet then! I am trying to watch the M3 webstream launch right now but it is buffering and stuttering like crazy!! M3's have just been driven onstage...

Anyone know an Australian price yet? Nope, and we won't know until the car enters production next year. But EM has said the base price will be USD 35k. If we take today's exchange rate and add in import costs and taxes, a USD 35k car will cost at least AUD 55-60k. Add in a couple of options like long range battery and its 70k. What's truly off-the-scale extraordinary is that Tesla has secured over 132,000 reservations globally in just 1 day. That is truly brain-busting. Currently the Leaf is the world's top selling BEV with just over 200k globally. Tesla will likey exceed that number in less than a week (notwithstanding that it will take them close to 2 years to make and deliver them all). I am simply gobsmacked!

Thanks! Yeah, saw EM's speech and the US$35k as well as the estimate of AUD$60k but how can they take nonrefundable deposits without telling you the final price? I know that's how the S was done but that was refundable. Anyone know an Australian price yet? Nope, and we won't know until the car enters production next year.
