I think it does mean we will have access to the new model Leaf and other cars if you can afford to import them. Note it only applies to new cars. Less than 12 months old.

yep this will open us up to both a better variety and better price.
eg, we can buy a brand new leaf in 2018 for 2.8M yen or around $28k + 1800 shipping + 10% GST.
Will have an even bigger impact on both cost and resale for luxury vehicles.
Its great to see the overseas manufacturer monopoly on imports broken.

one issue with some EVs will be serviceability. A LEAF would be fine as long as local dealers agree to service it, but who would you call if your Zoe broke down....
not such an issue with FFB because they all have ODB2 ports and most mechanics have global scan tools

A LEAF would be fine as long as local dealers agree to service it, but who would you call if your Zoe broke down.... not such an issue with FFB because they all have ODB2 ports and most mechanics have global scan tools If it was an ICE car I would be worried, but because there is less likely things to go wrong with an EV, I wouldn't worry too much (except if there are battery issues)
