3 year service. I asked about the rust problem and the service department said they would get the parts in for me. All done now at no cost.
On a separate note I asked them to check the heater as the problem is brought up on forums. They checked it. Pump not working. Back in soon to have the pump replaced (still no charge), and get the update from 2G to 3G. Yeah.

After being away over xmas I've come back to a call from Nissan offering to pay for 50% of the shock absorber replacement due to the rust visible at the head of the shock - will be having a chat with them today ... I know I'm out of warranty (car is 4 and a bit years old now) but if its a design problem - then i'd expect Nissan to pay all ....

Have a chat to consumer affairs. Nissan should pay as it is a design fault and is being replaced under warranty for all of us who were aware of it. Design was not fit for purpose.

Offer is 50% funded by Nissan - but Nissan Service said the surface rust isn't an issue impacting the car in anyway (apart from maybe making it a tad more difficult to remove the bolts in the future) and it can't rust anymore. I'm erring on the side of not forking out my 50% for something that the manufacturer says will not impact the car..... thoughts ?

Mine are greased and covered but I'm not replacing them as my warranty was run out when I first discovered the problem.

Mine became pretty bad on the drivers side, so I had them replaced. But I haven't got my car yet as waiting for battery repair. I usually replace shocks at 200,000 - 250,000km. Along with bushes and cv boots if damaged.

Can anyone suggest a Nissan dealer in Sydney who might be helpful regarding the rusted suspension nut issue? I just bought a 2013 LEAF and discovered the driver's side nut is rusted badly. Car was first registered July 2013.

Hi Jbanyer,
Congrats on your purchase. If you're not too far from Rockdale Nissan they're alright. I recently had my battery swapped there without issues and they had another LEAF in the service centre car park.
The nuts themselves are less than $5 each so if you know a good mechanic they can just do it for you. I think (you'll have to check) the part number is 54588-ED00A.

Nissan Alexandria replaced mine without making a fuss.
For what it is worth: I have now inserted the OEM covers and covered over them with a rubber drain plunger from hardware store. Prevents all water ingress. Originally only put plunger on driver side but later found water in passenger side despite OEM covers. Now have plunger on both sides.

For the record, I took the car to Rockdale Nissan. They sent pics to Nissan Australia, who agreed to cover 50% of the replacement shocks. I ended up paying about $390. Hopefully the battery will last and/or replacement batteries become an option so the repair will have been worthwhile.

The cap of this fruit salad container does the job for my Leaf. You have to turn the cap to find the just fit position.
I thought this 'salad cap' solution was a nutter. Surely the original 'cap' does a better job. I haven't checked mine for a LOOOOONG time as I've installed the proper 'cap', so surely no issue. Boy oh boy, I'm so wrong!! So, the rest of you, please re-check! The proper 'cap' still does a poor job in protecting the strut from rust. It actually made it worse, as no evaporation allowed. I just checked mine recently after heavy down-pour. After a week, the puddle still there (yes, with orange colored rust water). Long story cut short, I'm following leafmedo advise here, using a larger cap, so it covers larger area, but still allow evaporation.

I used caps from septic enzyme treatment containers. They worked a treat, no shit (as Tesla Bjorn would say).

Thanks for the reminder rusdy! Our strut tops had a bit of surface rust but nothing major. I hadn't checked them since I put the genuine Nissan Caps on about 6months ago, with a bit of grease. They are NOT doing a good job (see picture)! A puddle of rusty water. And we haven't had much rain here in QLD over winter. Maybe it's partly from the window washer jets. It's time for the Salad/Enzyme lid - just have to find the right one. Attachments:

Any idea where we can get that particular fruit salad? That brand is only coming up with cans and tubs. There are all sorts of different fruit salad tubs of course, but I'm not sure they'll be the right size. We have a few enzyme tubs as well (9.5cm and 10cm internal diameter), but they don't seem to fit.
Would someone be able to measure the internal diameter of the correct lid?

Aldi doesn't have the best search-engine results, so they might still have them but just don't come up. I'll try the other 2 as well, in case they have it but not on their website (which is not as common for them).

Thanks everyone . Now that the size is confirmed, I'll check out other lids as well. I was looking at those Goulburn Valley ones online, since the black lids would look good.

No luck so far. Aldi doesn't have the Fruit Salad anymore. And all Woolworths/Coles I tried only seem to have the 700g salad, which have smaller lids. I'll keep trying the Enzyme powers etc. Some come close. I also found Nutella jars, and Flour in a tub, which might work.

I actually didn't buy them, because I assumed the lids were too small (over 1cm smaller than what leafmedo measured). But maybe I should buy some just to be sure hehe.

Why they were made with those holes is a complete mystery, but I blocked mine and the caps have kept the well dry - no sign of water ingress, no rust.

I thought it'd be important to let some moisture evaporate. But if it lets more in than it lets out, I don't see a point to the hole. So I'll definitely try that evangelist, thank you.

I blocked my holes with silicone but water still gets in. If you try and it still gets wet at least you won't be the only one.

I blocked mine by covering it with a sheet of aluminium foil, so it still can evaporate via the hole (I.e. not totally blocked). However, as I've learnt the hard way, need to ensure water doesn't get into anywhere to the top of the strut in the first place (maybe the clicking noise from the genuine cap is a false assurance of water tightness ) In short, cap to cover the lot. Magic!
