[quote source="/post/10034/thread" author=" jeffjl" I think everyone who has checked has found some signs of rust and for some reason worse on the drivers side.[/quote] For the obvious reason (if you care to look) that on the drivers side the windscreen runoff drains around the wiper driveshaft, which is directly above the top of the strut, unlike the passenger side.

Thanks for enlightening me Jeff and Phoebe. I hadn't really looked for where the water drained.

Yes, I have rust too. I'm out of warranty but I'll press the dealer to replace at no cost.

Glad I found this in the nick of time... My 12 months will be up soon... And yes plenty of rust on mine - being on the Gold Coast I guess doesn't help - drivers side below... And my car is garaged at night and under shade sails during the day... Attachment Deleted

And my car is garaged at night and under shade sails during the day... Did it not get fixed in your service (with the wheel alignment?) Did you buy 2nd hand. The warranty is for three years.

No this is the first I knew about it (reading on this forum) and they didn't find it... Though sounds like Nissan knew about the issue at the time. And I bought the car new :-( (So yes another 2 years on the warranty thanks) Ps so is there anything only covered for 12 months warranty that I should be checking?

I just took a look at your drivers side photo, that's the worst I've seen! Wonder if they'll have trouble removing it?

I agree with feng; doesn't look good. Corrosion repairs are a pain - never straightforward. My Leaf had light corrosion, but I had it booked in for that and a minor service from 10-4; they weren't finished until after 4. The car needed to be hoisted and the struts supported, and they had to go very slowly and carefully with disassembly. So I suggest you hope for the best timewise, but prepare for the worst as they say...

Our LEAF goes in on 4 April to have the rust fixed. They have ordered parts but we don't know exactly what they are replacing.

Had my Leaf in for it's 30k service today. Had completely forgotten to check the rust status of my car or mention it to the dealer. Turns out they checked anyway and have ordered the parts for me. So congrats to Moorooka Nissan on that one.

I was wondering if anyone knows exactly what parts are ordered in order to effect this repair?

Oh, I see what you mean with regards the cover. I just thought they may be getting in more components over and above that.

I would imagine it could be as little as a new alloy nut, to a full strut replacement depending on the severity of the rust

Without sealing the hole in the cover, the water still gets in. Need to put tape across hole. Or use bath plug :-) Stupid design.

My leaf will be going in soon for full strut replacements under warranty - but no preventative (ie rubber caps). Have also asked Nissan central to investigate premature battery bar loss (6,500km & 8 months new).

Have also asked Nissan central to investigate premature battery bar loss (6,500km & 8 months new). Hmmm. My struts are also rusted out and I reported this to Moorooka Nissan several months ago. I am now booked in for a general service this Wednesday 16th but will have to wait a (lot) longer for the rusted nut&strut removal. I have 12 bars at 9,120kms so no worries there, but I noticed on my last 100% charge that LeafSpy Pro reported only 18kWh out of the possible 24kWh. My range "seems" to be down a bit but range is so variable that I will have to check it a lot more to see if I have lost any.

It is entirely successful at staying put, and keeping the top of the strut dry and clean.

I've had my petrol cap and bath plug taped on for 3 months and the tape hasn't come off, the whole thing is exactly as I put it in the first place.

The dealer said it's normal for the bolts to rust (!) and I shouldn't be concerned. They're ordering in the protective caps from Japan. Eta is three weeks. Underwhelmed. Will look forward to changing to Tesla model 3.

I had my service at Nissan Moorooka on Thursday and reported the rust. They said they were ordering in parts (mention of bolts and struts) for our car and some other cars with the same problem. It just isn't a nice idea to think rust on ones precious car after such a short time, even though I wouldn't have known about it without reading about it here. I'll have to look into those Bunnings caps. Caralyn, I'll be interested to hear what response you get about the loss of a bar. I mentioned our bar loss the other day, but all they did was the usual not-very-informative battery report. Their Leaf mechanic was on holidays.
