No the noise from the struts came from under the bonnet and made a godawful groaning noise. The rubbing noise sounds likes like plastic from within the dashboard. I can't remember if it still makes the noise, I might have become desensitised to it.
I briefly went through the menus earlier to see if there was a sleep setting and couldn't find it. Hope they find a simple fix tomorrow and don't try to rip you off!

I sounds like a small electric motor that would be used to drive a fan or a pump. I can't hear any fan blade noise, so it's likely a pump. There is at least one coolant pump for cooling the charger / controller / motor. I can hear some noises that might be air bubble passing through a pump. It may be that the pump runs at startup as an operational test.

Or symptom of deeper problem, i.e. my strut going to fall off? My leaf hasn't had any service in the last 40,000km (last service on 45kk, and now at 80-ish kk). I'm planning to take it in at closer to 90-ish kk and change the 'gearbox' oil at that time (i.e. doing the 100kk service). Did I mention the Leaf is actually a great car (minus the battery)?

The diagnosis was as follows: There are 2 pumps that circulate the coolant. One of the pumps is not working so the other one is operating at higher speed to compensate. They have ordered the replacement pump and this should fix it. Pump $400, labour about $500 so $900 all up 😨. On top of that I’m getting new tyres ($640) and the service fee is $380 so my most expensive visit to Nissan yet. The screen was apparently just a setting in the menu... not sure how or when I changed it.

Looks like a common occurrences in our Leafs...

Looking up the parts catalogue at Amayama the cheaper one is about $271 and the more expensive one is $337 so it's not too far fetched. Part numbers are 215813NA0A and 925523NA0A if you're curious.

I was told it wasn't dangerous at the time but you wouldn't want to neglect them too much.
I think I'm about 70k past my service interval and plan to get my brake fluid flushed next month. Still wondering if I should change my reduction gear fluid at 150,000km.
