I've been making use of the Nissan supplied charger with a 15 to 10 amp adapter for over a year now but I'd love the thought of a plugless setup. I sent an email to these guys a while ago and they said to stay tuned as the were looking into the international market. They've just announce Europe so perhaps if we make some noise they'll include Aus. www.pluglesspower.com/buy/nissan-leaf-plugless-l2-3-3kw-complete-system/

induction charging looses energy a long the way so your wasting energy for convenience.. the use of a 15 to 10 and a Nissan supplied EVSE, is probably the most inconvenient way to charge, a proper 15amp socket, a 2nd EVSE, a wallbox EVSE, roof mounting a retractable cable www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcj7jhALXio . would all be steps up from your current situation.

Inductive charging looks cool but the 15% loss is a bit on the high side...

Inductive charging looks cool but the 15% loss is a bit on the high side... Yep... inductive charging is fine for an electric toothbrush, not so sure it's a good idea to scale it up for an EV.

All right so I'm still charging my leaf in the most inconvenient but cheapest way possible (extension cord to 10amp to 15amp converter then supplied leaf charger during day to utilize solar panels) but this next level of induction charging is for me - all they need to do is hook it up to a big solar farm and we can happily zoom all over the place. www.boredpanda.com/electric-car-charge-road-highways-england/

One point you might want to note: You will need to remove your spare tyre.

Hi everyone,
This is my first post. I have just purchased a Nissan Leaf and it is arriving in 2 weeks from WA. I live in VIC. After reading some of the posts here, I decided to purchase the Clipper Creek EVSE. I have a friendly electrician next door so it should be a simple matter to get a 15 amp circuit installed in the garage. Is there anything special I need to know to get the unit installed? I gather it will be straightforward for my electrician friend.

Welcome Jake. Congrats on your new purchase, you'll love it! Should be simple for a sparky to install a 15A circuit, but you may want to consider installing cabling for a 32A circuit to future proof yourself. I have 32A cabling with a 32A fuse and a Clipsal 20A switched socket. I also have a Latronics energy meter ( www.latronics.com.au/products/latronics-energy-meter ) installed in the fuse box to monitor current & instantaneous power, but thats entirely optional though. As mine is in my driveway, I also have it housed in a lockable box. I'm pretty happy with my CC EVSE as well, as it's very portable. Have fun.

Thanks for the advice tjgeel,
I'll ask my sparky friend about the 32 Amp circuit and if it's not too expensive, I'll go with it.

I just emailed Clipper Creek at received a prompt response...
Their ECS20 charges at 15amp constant Has a J1772 connector and an AS3112 plug on the 12 inch lead cable. Supplied with the wall mounted holster - shipping to Oz around US$72.
Sounds perfect for me.
I like the idea of being able to program the charge current such as with EVSEupgrade. But in reality, I can't see why I would want to charge at a lower amperage with the device that will be connected to a dedicated 15amp plug.
If I want to charge at 10 amps, I'll just use the Nissan EVSE.

As mentioned earlier, there are plenty of other options for EVSEs. Some examples include: 30A Juice box for $950 from Aus supplier Egodock: www.egodock.com.au/#!ego-dock-products/cee5 16A or 32A Jetcharge Wallpod with tethered j1772 lead for $924 www.jetcharge.com.au/wallpod/wallpod-j1772-tethered-leadOr for a more universal approach (bring your own type 2 to type 1 cable): 16A or 32A Jetcharge type 2 socket wall pod for $1034 www.jetcharge.com.au/wallpod/wallpod-type-2-socketOr Gabz products... rechargingnsw.com.au/products/kecontact-p20-series/ , great products but you are looking >$1000. But remember that our Leafs have a 3.3kw charger onboard, so they can't draw more than 15A. A 32A EVSE just allows us with some future proofing for when the new Leaf with a 6.6kW charger arrives (?). By the way, do many people carry or use a type 2 to type 1 cable for their Leafs? I was thinking of getting one just in-case I need it at some stage. Our local council is considering installing a couple of the Jetcharge type 2 socket wall pods (ie byo cable).

I'm not sure how many would carry the type 2 to type 1... I can say that I do carry the type 2-1 cable as I've set up a charge station at my in-laws. I've got my set-up from Gabz, does the job and very happy with it. In my opinion, the type two chargers are perfect for public use areas. WA have very wisely gone with this set-up as opposed to most of America and unfortunately Sydney, maybe Melbourne too?? ... Eventually Copper thieves figure out there's about 5 dollars of copper in the cable I used to have a photo of a charge-point station with the cables cut-off... very disappointing when you're there for a charge. Finally the cables when not in use are usually a big mess, at best maybe even a coiled mess on the charge-point station or equivalent lol...

More money in the cable than in a charge.
Good news. The copper price is down. The cables are safe for the moment.

As type 2 socket chargers proliferate in public spaces, people will start getting used to carrying cables. If Europe can do it so can we. Given that there is no set standard in Australia anymore for AC, it makes no sense for site owners to buy EVSE that only services one standard, or be forced to buy two different types. We have confidence that the socket option will be the preferred choice going forward, especially as more and more EV manufacturers start pushing towards 3 phase AC charging.

Use a type 2 to j1772 always in France. Don't think I have ever seen a type 1 publically in Europe. Back in oz for a while now. Hey Les when you do a type 2 outlet can you put in a three phase socket as well please. Will allow me to use my portable 10kw chademo 😉

What a load of crap! For that argument to work they need to factor in the energy it takes to drill the oil, refine it, transport it across the world, truck it to my local station and running the station. Thanks for taking a step backwards instead of forwards! Besides, most of us power our cars from our own solar panels. PLUS, even if today this is the case, we need to move everyone's thinking forward as we can solve these problems over time, but the solution is NOT petrol cars. Come on people, just think for a moment! Old post, but sadly this is why Australia is in trouble. My reply as follows:- Well. It appears the writer, and/or the source of the information used is sadly, as with most things, flawed. I challenge the writer of this to prove his assumptions and conclusions with an open minded approach. Remarkably, this will not happen!. It should be a criminal OFFENCE to mislead the readers in a country with main-stream publications. It's propaganda like this that will eventually leave Australians in the rear view mirror of the world, .... and the 21st century. If the Holden & Cart are what we have...., remarkably similar to the Eastern communist countries version, the Trabant, then confusing witterings such as this will keep us there... until one day there will be no 20th century vehicles available. The manufacturers of this out-dated technology have moved on, and we should be given a clear, un-fettered view as Australians. When our generation is gone, we owe it to our future generations to pave the way without concerning ourselves with the federal coffers. I know the way at present is pacification, and throwing Dollars at them to keep them happy. Take a good look at other things in life which gain Dollars for similar. Buying happiness is a short-sighted and fundamentally flawed method. Shame on you. Why are journalists allowed to do this?.
