It's no secret I want to get rid our our family sedan ICE as soon as possible. As much as the Tesla Model S looks to be an awesome car, it's simply too expensive in Aus. Also it has no door bins - deal breaker I wouldn't normally consider an SUV, but the Tesla Model X does look tempting. There are times when the ability to seat more than 5 is very advantageous, and if those gull-wing doors actually work in confined spaces, it would sure tick the 'wow' factor box. (Allegedly they do work, they are hinged near the middle of the roof and so it is claimed need less space either side of the vehicle to open than conventional doors. Hmm. What about clearance above the roof?) BUT... no indication on price or range that I've seen. And it costs $6000 to put your name down on the waiting list - somewhat of a gamble. The RHD version is not available until late next year - 6 months after the LHD version. And that timing is already more than a year later than what was signalled 2 years ago. How much more time slippage will there be?!? I've seen some here call Tesla "cowboys" - not sure what it meant by that. So do I or don't I... the next long range EV replacement for my ICE may not be until 2017 with Leaf Gen 3 or Tesla Model 3. I don't know if I can wait that long.

model s is too pricey then there is nothing to indicate to me the model x will be cheaper... I would say it's likely to cost more.
rumours of a BMW i5 maybe.

The Model X will be more expensive than the Model S so if you think the S is too expensive same for the X. The X is anticipated to be about $7-10,000 extra above an S.
Tesla's are awesome. I wish I could afford one now. I have a weird leasing thing with work where the cars have to be below the luxury car tax so I'm hoping as soon as the S's that were locally delivered hit three years old there may be a second hand one for sale at $77,000 and I'll buy it in a heart beat. We're also waiting for superchargers which will allow the Melbourne to Sydney run (end of this year).
Tesla is a bit known for missing dealines with delivery, especially on a new model I wouldn't get your hopes up that the X will be available in Oz this year. My gut feel is Mid 2016 deliveries. I also don't expect the model 3 will arrive until late 2017 early 2018.
We will have other options soon though hopefully. A 300+ km range Hyundai plus a possible 300+ km range Kia and even Leaf bu end of 2016/17.

The reasoning was the S is an unashamedly luxury car with its interior appointments etc. and that the X would be more mainstream. But that could be wrong - I've also just read that the X will have AWD standard, meaning two traction engines. That's hardly going to lower the cost!! If the X is the same price or even more expensive than the S, then my dreams will remain that I know the X will be not be in Oz this year - the Telsa website says deliveries "late 2016".

Also I read that Elon said it would be single digit percent higher in price than the S.

I had a Model S-85 for a day and it is everything everyone says and then some. Fan-bloody-tastic. (I published a review in the June 15 issue of "SILICON CHIP" magazine.)
If I had a money tree I'd be first in line.
The 450km+ range proves it can be done (Nissan? Are you listening? NISSAN? NISSAN? Hello, is anyone home?)
If I had my druthers, I'd be waiting a few months for the D model (4WD, 2 motors).

Would you not consider a Prius V just out of warranty and get a 10kW add on battery pack to convert it to PHEV for $15K + install? I know it's not really an EV and has none of the servicing advantages of the EV but it might be a lot less painful to the hip pocket.

If someone living in north Qld wanted to own a Tesla - how would they have it serviced? Teslas don't need servicing From the Tesla servicing page: Annual Service ContractUnlike gasoline cars, an electric car doesn’t need oil changes, fuel filters, spark plugs, smog checks, etc., which are only needed if the mode of locomotion involves burning oil derived products. For an electric car, you don’t even need to replace the brake pads, because most of the braking energy is regeneratively captured by the motor and returned to the battery. As such, we are comfortable making the annual checkup entirely optional. There is still value to having Tesla look at the car once a year for things like tire alignment, to address a few things here & there and perform any hardware upgrades – our goal is not just to fix things, but to make the car better than it was. However, even if you never bring in the car, your warranty is still valid.
