For a100% charge plus extra time for balancing just set a suitable start time but no end time (after cancelling the timer).

I've done a bit of checking, and the manual states you can't copy the SD (from other reading, they say the encryption uses the SD serial number, so it can't be copied), but given it stays in place, it should be unlikely to fail in-car. OK I misread the manual. Where it says "An SD card containing map data is provided with the vehicle and is inserted in the right hand slot of the system. To transfer the data, always insert an SD card in the slot on the left side" I interpreted "transfer the data" as "transfer the map data". Also it says "The data that was transferred into an SD card cannot be used by other navigation systems" which I read as "maps won't work in another car". Oh well.

For a 100% charge plus extra time for balancing just set a suitable start time but no end time (after cancelling the timer). To do that don't you just cancel the timer altogether? Car will start charging as soon as you plug it in, and charge to 100%? I tried to be smart and have the car set so that it would stop charging at 80%, but always start charging immediately upon plugging in. We usually only plug it in towards the end of the day, so I set the timer with an empty start time and a stop time of 8am. But that didn't work! Car never started charging. So now I have a start time of 8am and stop time of 7:55am.

I think the reason for it not working for you is that as the start time is unknown until it is calculated at the time from the battery level, the charger activates during the next complete 24 hour period finishing with the set end time. So if you plugged in Monday evening for an 8am stop time, the timer period would start at 8am Tuesday morning, start charging at some point later on Tuesday or early Wednesday, and stop charging at 8am Wednesday.
