I am surprised they even sold that many - Nissan hasn't been pushing them. But just in the last few days there have been several spots on Facebook and Twitter.

So 351 in the last two years. 149 to be accounted for. Does anybody know of the 2011 and 2012 sales?

I wouldn't include the 19 from 2011 as coming off the total Nissan brought over in the first batch of our guess of 500 units for sales starting in 2012. The 2011's were the Vic EV Trial cars all EU spec recently sold via ballot.

Hi, so working on these figures of the 2012-2014 sales, and the NZ sales, that comes to a total of 477 cars sold. If there were only 500 brought in, that would only leave 33 cars, including any unsold ones in NZ. Leafboi, what has led to your estimate of 500 cars in the batch brought in? As I haven't yet managed to find a car to test drive, 33 left unsold would be a bit of a worry. I would have thought that perhaps more than one colour (white) would have been likely to run out if numbers were that low. Hmmm

So if the data is correct (Nissan imported 500 into ANZ) then 500-(188+173+77)-(2+37) = 23. That would suggest Nissan runs out of Leafs in the next 6 weeks. Do we believe that? Would they then consider bringing in the next model? I reckon one of the major reasons sales are slowing is the current model is getting very dated (even though it's still a magnificent car). EV buyers are probably very well informed and when they see 2012 build probably recoil somewhat and start eyeing the BMW (even though I seriously dislike its looks) or other EVs / PHEVs.

It's exciting to speculate on what happens after. There's probably an inventory manager at Nissan who must be so relieved that the 2+ year old stockpile is finally almost gone. They're probably hesitant to make that mistake again, not without another solid push in marketing and charging infrastructure.
I think it's also pretty cool to see new members here every week or two.

Leafboi, what has led to your estimate of 500 cars in the batch brought in? Well Carsales did have vin numbers at one point on new dealer stock and no vin had any number over 500 as the last three digets. Also Nissan AU said when the LEAF first came here that they anticipated selling in the 'hundreds' each year. So 500 cars in August 2012 would have been plenty for 2012-2013 if hundreds per year were going to be sold leaving room for us to get the refresh at the end of 2013 like everyone else. But since their hundreds turned into tens it wasn't how they planned I guess. IMO.

That's pretty clever sleuthing. It reminds me of the German tank problem. Not quite the same thing, but it was an interesting historical thing.

My gut feel is when they sell the last cars they will not bring in any of the newer ones (Gen 2) but will rather wait for the Gen 3 which they have been talking about in light of the Chevy Bolt announcement. The new Leaf is going to have >300 km range but won't be out until next year at the earliest. They might make the Leaf a special order to come in from Japan or just halt sales but I couldn't see them going to the hassle of bringing in Gen 2's and being in the same state as now i.e. 1-2 years behind the rest of the world's models.

Got my 60k service done at Steve Jarvin today. I saw two red LEAFs in the car park and wondered if one of them was markrmarkr's. Turns out they're both new cars waiting to be sold (cobwebs all over). Somebody is still buying them since the last time I was there there was a silver LEAF waiting to be sold. One of the red LEAFs had a Brisbane sticker on the window, maybe they're redistributing the last of the inventory among dealers?

That would make sense. This post on MNL is suggesting that there is now no new stock in New Zealand, and that some Nissan dealers are resorting to 2nd-hand imports from Japan, joining all the Japanese market importers who have been doing this for some years. There are a number of 2014 and a few 2015 registered (Japan) Leafs currently advertised, as well as older stock. And this post is suggesting that currently, 2nd-hand import EV sales (mainly Leafs) make up the biggest segment of the EV market (BEV + PHEV, new and used) in NZ. In 2015 there were 57 new BEV registrations, 192 used-import BEV registrations, and 242 PHEV registrations.

The Nissan AU website still shows them for sale and still shows red, silver and black as being available colours. But it's also possible they haven't updated the website recently. It took them a long time to add the note "Blue Ocean is no longer available". Seriously, a year ago I thought they had 1-2 months stock left max, based on reported import quantity and reported number of sales. So I wonder whether they actually imported a lot more than 500 cars. Something doesn't add up!

Hello! Does anyone know if all the Leafs have that white upholstery - it seemed so vulnerable to marking and stains - how have people solved that? I imagine most of the members of this forum are the kind of person who gets about in oily overalls, as I do? Does everyone buy seat covers? Are they easy to get to fit on a Leaf?

Some, especially those with kids, have seat covers.

Yep we got seat covers installed by the dealer as part of our haggling during purchase. They fit and look great.

We've got kids and never used seat covers or had any fabric protection done. Upholstery looks fine after 14 months. The seat fabric I think is made from recycled PET bottles. Whenever there has been a stain on the fabric we've just used a wet wipe and cleaned it up - no problems. Oily overalls might be a bridge too far though.

The number of Leafs in NZ has reached 400! According to this document which is linked off this page there are 86 new Leafs and 328 second hand imported Leafs, for a total of 414 Leafs registered in NZ, as of 29 February 2016. This is out of a total of 1,001 BEVs and PHEVs combined. Note that there appear to be no new stock of Leafs left in NZ. I wonder how these numbers compares with Australia?

Someone posted this on a recent LEAF Australia Facebook post: "I just rang Nissan Head office regarding the 2016 model. They said they don't know if it will be here this year as they need to "get rid of" over 20 2012 models first.". That's a pretty lousy attitude for a start and I don't know if that's an accurate figure or not.

That's a pretty lousy attitude for a start and I don't know if that's an accurate figure or not. That would tally with the speculation that 500 were brought here in the first place. Still 20 isn't that many. Surely they will be sold by the end of the year. The prices are going down all the time.

In Australia, Leaf sales of 488 from 2010-March 2015 according to this link. According to this site, there were 109 YTD '15. From here there were 31 in Q1 '15, so a total 2010-Sept '15 of 566. Nissan NZ no longer advertise the Leaf.

So adding in the new Leafs sold in NZ (86), and say 30 sales in Oz Oct-Dec '15, that's a total of around 680 Leafs to the end of 2015. So if Nissan imported 700, they would have only about 20 left, which should be cleared in the next month or so. Adds up. It also means we were wrong all along that they imported 500. I hope Nissan don't bring in the 2016 model which has only incremental improvements, but instead wait for the next generation model later this year / early next which should have 300+ km range.

G'day all. I'm new to this forum because I am a new Leaf owner. To answer Fengs comment above. I just bought the last of the 2 red ones at Steve Jarvin. A lady drove off in the other one as I arrived. I was told mine was the last one in NSW. I pick it up in a couple of weeks. It would be sooner but I have work commitments and can't get there. I was told the reason for slow sales has been "lazy salesmen". The condition of a dealership to sell the GTR is to also sell the Leaf. Dealers have the leaf on their books, but the only are interested in selling the GTR.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to it, and learning lotsa stuff on this forum.
