I took delivery of my new Leaf (demonstrator actually) a week ago and got home to find I had a flat battery. Not the car, the spare key! Little wonder, as the key came sandwiched between the two owners' manuals in the pouch and the middle button bulges outwards. Probably had its button pressed for 3 years. That would flatten it. Fortunately, I had a 2025 battery floating around at home so I followed the instructions in the book for changing it. Works fine now.

Congrats on your purchase ThirdRonnie! You can update your status to say you own one now. Lucky you for being Tasmanian and running your car off hydro!

I think most people here have had the pleasure of replacing the batteries in their key fobs. I replaced both of mine withing 3 months of getting the car as the warning was coming up on the dash.
Oh yeah. Congrats on your purchase. Are you going to let us know the price you paid?

I just typed a lengthy reply about running on hydro, but it bombed out then I tried to post it. Not happy. I'll re-write it later.

This thread started off about the key and I will return to that. I had to replace the battery in my key after about 18 months but I have never had to again. I am wondering if the original batteries were a bit old? What are other people's experiences?

I mean the battery on both remotes.

I am wondering if the original batteries were a bit old? What are other people's experiences? When I picked up my LEAF from the dealer (Sept 2016), one of the keys was a bit "iffy". The salesman told me to bring it back in a week and they would replace both the batteries. No problems since.

Yeah we've just done our second set of remote batteries.
But one thing we do which would not be good for the remote; when we are racing and sometimes towing we leave the key in the car for many hours. No doubt the key and car are chattering away all that time

I thought my key fob was running flat so I changed the battery. The replacement was also bad and after confirming it wasn't a bad battery I noticed the electrical contacts on the circuit board where the back half of the fob touches the front half were dirty. It might have been oxidation. After cleaning the contacts with an alcohol soaked cotton bud it was good as new.
Just in case this happens to anyone else.

...I noticed the electrical contacts on the circuit board where the back half of the fob touches the front half were dirty... Judging from your Leaf usage history (i.e. very well used), that bound to happen!
