When I went for a drive the other day, I realised I will never reach 5 trees because I need a comfort stop when I reach 2 1/2 trees

Leave the engine running and take the key. The car will stay on but even if someone gets in they won't be able to go anywhere without the key! Then you'll get to 5 trees!

;D I thought of that, but it was altogether too complicated and I realised I was not that desperate to reach 5 trees ;D

Leave the engine running and take the key. The car will stay on but even if someone gets in they won't be able to go anywhere without the key! Then you'll get to 5 trees! Are you sure? When I bought the car the dealer told me about an owner who swapped drivers with his partner while the car was on and when the partner reached her destination she wasn't able to start the car again because the key was left in the owner's pocket at home. I haven't tested it myself but always assumed that no key means no restart but the car is still driveable if left on. I don't think you can lock it from the outside while the car is still on either.

Hmmm, I know it brings up a KEY NOT IN CAR message as I see that a lot if I jump out to mail a letter.
I'll test it and see. Either way there isn't much motivation to do it, but be nice to know what would happen if you were car jacked. You could just run away and after the culprits realise they can't go anywhere, just casually stroll back to your car later!

No Jim, you would lose your car. I just did the experiment. When I removed the key with the engine turned on, I got the REMOVED KEY message and a few squarks, but then it went quiet and the car would still go. Once you turn it off it won't start again without the key being nearby but that isn't much help if the car is GONE So, I'm glad I didn't try that while I was travelling and I hope your letter box is very close when you jump out to post a letter ;D
