I think part of the problem is that we don't use the charges enough. If other drivers see us plugged in, they may start being more courteous.
Another issue is how many of those chargers are functional. For instance, the Westfield Hornsby charger is non-functional but we can still charge from the 10amp GPOs there, as we did on the meet-up.

I've had second thoughts about plugging in without permission after that guy who got arrested in the US and Mark's run in with security at Hornsby. If I ever need to charge at Hornsby I might ask the concierge first just to cover myself.
Has anyone here encountered another EV owner plugged in when going to a public charging station? I would be super excited to run into another EV owner!
I thought about leaving a note on that lonely Sydney City Chargepoint just to show it's been used. Something like "Just curious who else uses this, leave your name, date and a message below". Would taping a sticker advertising Ozleaf be going too far?

Yes that is too far - Jim doesn't want any old body signing up who doesn't like EV's and puts nasty posts on our friendly web site

Fair enough. Then just a message log it is. I'll find a plastic envelope and just tape it unobtrusively somewhere to the charger. Hopefully the dealer won't mind. I hope after a few months it won't be just a list with my name on it!

Feng I guess the recargo/plugshare check ins are the high tech version of that.
The dealer should be able to log in and view the charger usage on the chargepoint website if your really interested.

Nah, I won't bother the dealer about it, it was just my curiosity. I've just checked the site in on Recargo: www.recargo.com/sites/6994

the idea behind recargo/plugshare is really cool because you check in with good and bad status it allows EV drivers to know how reliable a charging point will be. if there are a lot of bad you know that it breaks a lot or it gets ICEd a lot and it's not reliable.
I think part of good charging etiquette is reporting non working chargers

Feng,
Although I spoke to Security twice at Westfield hornsby, it was never beligerant. I just stayed cool and there was no problem. Remember it was quite late at hornsby so it is reasonable for them to be interested.
The good thing about hornsby is you can point at the QC and say you were expecting to use it, and do they know why it is not working.
If I needed charge at Hornsby I wouldnt hesitate
I think the most important thing we can do is use the infrastructure whenever we can, so the ice crowd gets used to us.

Has anyone here encountered another EV owner plugged in when going to a public charging station? I would be super excited to run into another EV owner! I frequently 'encounter' another LEAF plugged in at the fast charger close to my work. Hogging the spot, plugged in, not charging. I've left a nice note saying I use the charger too and that it would be good for them to move after charging but that hasn't helped. Also at other regular ChargePoints around the city there is infrequently a LEAF lugged in here and there and what gets me is they are never charging. I'm hopefully that most of those cars are from the EV trial and the participants using the cars are just not clue-ed in enough to realize other people want to charge. As for the 'Log' on the charger, that's a great idea. In Japan a lot of business owners and EV enthusiasts place these logs on their chargers to either get feedback or suggestions etc. I know we have the apps and I use recargo almost every time I charge in public but it seems no one else does here in Melbourne hardly ever log their charge or charge in public. So the physical log would encourage more interaction.

What if you leave progressively more irate messages on that LEAF? Maybe get someone else to write messages in different handwriting so it'll look like they're not just spoiling it for one person but for a number of EV owners? What a selfish jerk!
Who owns the QC and can they do anything about it? It might carry more weight if they got a note on their windshield with a company letterhead on it?
There's probably a flyer explaining EV etiquette somewhere on the internet.

most QC have a .5-1 hours parking limit on them. maybe you should ask for the space have a 30min limit on it.
I've put a sign one of the charge points with a QR code to the recargo entry.

excellent idea re the QR code!
I've got to be honest, I just don't ever plan to recharge on the go...it is way too patchy, and with the exception of the North Strathfield quick charge it is way too slow.
If I end up cutting it close I just drop the speed significantly, and rely on the fact that the range gauge is very very pessimistic for the last few bars.

No and No. I think the shopping centre probably owns it now so Stockland would be the people to ask. I haven't been to that shopping centre since I bought my LEAF and don't expect to. I used to live round the corner in Edgeworth before I moved to Maitland.

I've put a sign one of the charge points with a QR code to the recargo entry. I stopped by the Tuggerah QC today and saw your handywork stuck to the front panel, nicely done! Should I put a photo of it up on Recargo? Was there a sign over the emergency stop as well? There's a strip of duct tape over the top but the sign looks like it was removed. The emergency stop was pressed again. I also drove around to see if I could spot a powerpoint to charge like at Hornsby. No luck finding one.

I like the idea of the owner of the plugged in car having their mobile number inside the windscreen, so that the next person wanting to charge can chivvy them up.
Would it be fair to say that for most people, two hours charge, on top of what they have remaining, would give them sufficient charge to get home ?
If so, then the charge bollard could / should be programmed to show the time the charge commenced, cut the charge after two hours, and display the time the charge terminated. This way, the next person along would have a better idea of the situation. ( Think that stupid " Back in 5 minutes " sign . . . there is no way of telling when it was put up ).
If the EV charge parking bay is ' free ', perhaps a parking charge could start two and a half hours after arrival and plug in. This would give the owner a half hour slot to move their car out of the bay before being penalised.
Yes, human nature being what it is, such a system could be open to abuse, with the first ' chargee ' returning after 2 hours, unplugging, and then plugging in again for another 2 hours. I recognise, of course, that none of our lovely Forum mebers would stoop to such a dastardly act.
As far as I am concerned, QCs should only give 30 minutes to 80% charge, and then switch off. This could deter those wanting to hang on for hours to get to 100% charge, thus potentially blocking many other users.

the blink model solved the issue buy charging $1 per hour regardless of if your pulling power or not. so if you left your car plugged in you got charged $1 per hour, even if your battery was full.

I always use the Blink charger at the Art Centre here in Melbourne, it's free. So are the two located at Melbourne Airport.

Charge point only charge 10 cents per hour and 50 cents max. It depends on the station owner. No ChargePoint I've ever used has cost anything here in Melbourne.
