Great stuff - I reckon that qualifies as a ' branch of LEAVes ' - or at least a seedling - helping to save the planet. We will see this grow to a ' tree ', and then a ' forest '. The only question is the timeline. It will take longer with a climate denying government that is highly unlikely to provide the ' fertiliser ' / incentives that are provided by some other, enlightened nations. Climbing off my ' soap box ' now

Heh, was actually a multi-charged day.
Much of the group charged on four different occasions within 24 hours just to make it there and back!
Was a fabulous day. I'm sure Feng is already dreaming up the next one...

I am! Here's a thought: If Phil Carlson from ACT ever becomes a member on this site and wants to meet, we could meet in Campbelltown for breakfast and then lunch in Berrima with him. There's a caravan park in Berrima, not sure if there's much else there and if it's worth doing. Similar in distances to yesterday but it'll be on a freeway. Phil has a 15A portable EVSE so he can drive a little further and charge a little faster (162km one way might be a bit too far for him, even with a pitstop in Goulburn).
Or we could meet at Katoomba some time next year before meeting Phoebe again at the Hunter Valley EV festival later in the year. All just ideas at this stage.
Duncan, how fast and how public is that charger at Berry again? I can reach Berry from my place, just wondering if it's something to try.

It seems the charger at Silos is Level 2 not fast charger....So feel free to involve it in your next plan....but it will still be a long lunch "And if you are coming by electric vehicle (EV) – we have a complimentary charging station for you to use – 10AMP or 15AMP is supported (and sourced only from renewable energy). We recommend you call ahead on 02 4448 6082 so that we can book in a slot for you." B640, Princes Highway, Berry NSW 2535

Thanks! I feel like I'm putting the cart before the horse but is it wrong for me to want to go there just because they have an EV charger? It's only 124km from my place. It's looking like a daytrip down south before having dinner and a charge there.

It turns out they don't have an actual EVSE, it's just a solar panel array with 10A and 15A sockets, it's BYO equipment. I'm still intrigued with the idea but need to plan more, maybe leave it till I get a real 15A portable EVSE.
They were very friendly with my enquries and asked if I they could take a photo of my car using it. Good PR opportunity for us and them!

Yeah, between relying on the sun and a 10a charger 130kms from home, you will need to think carefully! Chances of getting stuck are very real.
I suppose if you went early and could leave it plugged in for 8 hours during the day you would be okay.

But that would involve coming home 130kms in the dark with lights on I think an overnight stay would be in order here

Feng,
I was trying to see how Katoomba would work, so I plugged some addresses into Carwings (Earlwood to Katoomba) and it looked like it was possible, with 1 bar to spare.
Looking a bit more closely I realised the total distance was 100.34Km and would take 1hour and 1 minute. So Carwings was assuming a speed of 100km/h. I'd hope that travelling slower than this things would be a lot less tight.
This led me to check the "The Nissan Leaf Range chart" and I found that at 100km/h range is from 12 bars down to 1 bar for 100km. But at 80km/h range is more like 156km. More assuming low speed while still in the city. But I also noticed that you loose 1 bar for every 300m of altitude gain. Katoomba is at around 1000m so if we start from say 0m that's 3.3 bars - say 5KW or 58 km at that speed. But I'd be in turtle at Katoomba. And no environmentals.
So I'd be aiming more at 70km/h average speed, especially on the highways.
I was thinking of taking my wife and son with me but have no way to calculate the effect of weight on range. Does anyone have any guidance on this?
Also I notice there is a charge point at the Penrith Nissan dealer. Does anyone have any experience with them? It's at 55km so it'd be perfect for a midway top-up. But I don't think they are actively selling Leafs. A bad sign.

I've made it from Bexley to Katoomba on a full charge but it was cutting it awfully close, I think I was down to 6km on the GOM by the time I got there. This was the route I took: goo.gl/maps/t9HZF. It's the uphill part west of Penrith that drains the fastest even at 70km/h. One time I left the dealer with 122km on the GOM for the 56km drive and barely made it. On the flipside you get a hell of a lot of regen coming back down so don't be too worried if you think you haven't got enough charge for the return. You're best off using the Chargepoint at Penrith Nissan for an hour or two over breakfast. There's a McDonald's that's walking distance from the dealer and they also have their own on-site cafe which looked a bit average. The Chargepoint is right outside their service department reception, I asked before using it and they don't seem to mind.

I think I may have to do a preliminary reci to Penrith to check it out.
