Hi, I’m in Brisbane. I have very recently purchased a 2017 ( grey import) Leaf with 30 kWh battery. I have found out using the Internet that there is a battery maagement system update available for the 30kwh Leaf and would like to have it installed. It appears that this is available in NZ but I can find anything about it for Australia. Does anyone have any information on this ? Thanks

Have you used leafspy to check the version? Latest should be 4NR4C
Suggest reaching out to NZ's EVs Enhanced, via their Facebook page.

Brisbane would have had a single Leaf dealer for the generation 1 (AZE0) version leaf 2011 - 2017. Whoever that was (Westpoint Nissan?) would have at least two technicians trained to service the Leaf. I would expect they would be happy to do the battery firmware upgrade if necessary for a fee based on time to complete and their hourly rate for labour. If the dealer is unfamiliar with the problem there is a copy of the recall notice (for USA) here which you could show them: testing-public.carmd.com/Tsb/Download/129237/NTB18-039Summary: Reference: Date: NTB18-039 June 5, 2018 VOLUNTARY SERVICE CAMPAIGN 2016-2017 LEAF LITHIUM-ION BATTERY CONTROLLER REPROGRAM CAMPAIGN ID #: PC630 APPLIED VEHICLES: 2016-2017 LEAF (ZE0) Check Service COMM or Dealer Business Systems (DBS) National Service History to confirm campaign eligibility. INTRODUCTION Nissan is conducting this voluntary service campaign on certain specific model year 2016- 2017 LEAF vehicles to reprogram the Lithium-Ion Battery Controller (LBC). This service will be performed at no charge to the customer for parts or labor. IDENTIFICATION NUMBER Nissan has assigned identification number PC630 to this campaign. This number must appear on all communication and documentation of any nature dealing with this campaign. DEALER RESPONSIBILITY Dealers are to repair vehicles falling within range of this campaign that enter the service department. This includes vehicles purchased from private parties, vehicles presented by transient (tourists) owners, and vehicles in a dealer’s inventory.

Moorooka Nissan may be able to help. They don't sell the LEAF anymore, but they service them.

Hi I’m new here 30kwh my2016 and have the same issue. I need the update only have 11 bars. I used leaf spy And SOH was 72% I nearly died on the spot, but that doesn’t Make sense with 11 bars. I rang Nissan Sydney and they were very rude. So no help there, I emailed Japan global to make a complaint Will keep you informed. The firmware is apparently available in Europe but I can’t find it. I emailed EVs enhanced in NZ and they are. Dry helpful they replied Hi Andrew,
Thanks for your email. We are currently working on an easy way for our dealers to be able to perform these updates and should have an appropriate solution available before the end of the year..
At this point we do not have anyone there to perform these custom firmware updates.
So that’s a possibility yay. Cross your fingers.

Also, what was the odometer reading the vehicle had when you purchased it? Did if drop to 11 bars after a while or was it at 11 bars upon purchase?

It does sound like your car didn't get the BMS update before it left Japan, what's your VIN? it can be checked if yours got the recall update

Or the VIN just allows us to check if that vehicle is part of the batch which needs to do the BMS update?

How do I use my vin to check if BMS upgrade was done?? I bought my leaf in Jan. I was incredibly naive and didn't know what to look for - my fault I guess but a very costly and sickening mistake. My 2016 Leaf now has only 5 bars and has dropped from approx 140km range to some days under 100km. I paid alot of money for this car and am seriously hoping that a BMS upgrade will give me back at least some bars and some range. Nissan in Qld don't want to touch it. I am hoping evs enhanced can do it over here soon. But in the meantime, it would be great to know for sure that the BMS upgrade has not been done yet so that I can have some hope.

That's terrible to hear that your SOH has dropped to 5 Bars . It's a shame the Importer didn't check it with Leafspy for you (or at least confirm the number of bars). Or do you think the BMS was reset before it was sold, to deceive potential buyers? I've tried to find some Info on the Recall check via VIN, but had no luck. It was a voluntary recall (not safety related), so I'm even sure it'd appear in those databases. And it'd need have to access the Nissan Japan records. Your best bet is using Leafspy to read your Car's data. It'll confirm the BMS Firmware Version, and will also give you some insight into why your battery health is so low (ie. show a single bad cell, or overall degradation). Do you have an OBD Reader? If not, where in Brisbane are you located? Our 30kWh Leaf arrives from Japan in a few weeks, but I have Leafspy and an OBD Dongle already, so I'm happy to help.

Thanks I am in touch with EVs enhanced. They haven't rolled it out to Australia yet unfortunately. Ok, thanks for the info. Keep us updated, because I'm very interested in this as well. We weren't able to get the Firmware version checked or updated before our car left Japan. We'll know in a few weeks what version our 30kWh Leaf has. I'm wondering if I should contact EVs enhanced as well. If they get more enquiries about it, they might make it a priority.

Thanks I am in touch with EVs enhanced. They haven't rolled it out to Australia yet cvunfortunately. I contacted EVs Enhanced this week, and they said the FW Upgrades in Australia are a few months away. They have a few partners in Australia, including Brisbane.

I hope the upgrade will be commercially viable as well. My naive understanding is that Nissan Australia is currently offering 10-ish grand AUD battery replacement pack. That translates to just under 50-cents per kWh (i.e. original pack 24kWh / 10-ish grand). Since the 30kWh upgrade will definitely not offered by Nissan Australia (and/or approved), I doubt any aftermarket solution will match the 50-cents per kWh cost. I'd love to see myself wrong on this one though I myself planning to take the 10-ish grand offer from Nissan Australia sometime in a year or two. Anything more than 15k upgrade, I'd rather count my losses and buy an import.

Yeah exactly rusdy. No point spending $15k on a battery, when a whole car (newer with more features) can be had for $20k imported. Closer to $25k for a 30kWh these days, but still...
The Firmware update is listed on their website as NZ$200, so that's ok. But yeah, I'm not sure about battery costs. I think a good condition 2nd-hand one would be reasonable. But obviously the feeling of having a new one without degradation would be very nice.

Our 30kWh Leaf has arrived, and it looks like it has the updated 4C Firmware (not 4NR4C, but 4NN4C). So we're happy about that. I'm still considering the EVsEnhanced update, because it takes better care of the battery (reduces fast-charging if battery temperature is too high). But they say it is only useful for people who do multiple fast charges per day, which we'd rarely do (if ever). Attachments:

Thank you . We're very excited. It barely made it before all the companies go on Christmas break. All went well, apart from some damage to the rear sent base, which no one is willing to take responsibility for. But it's just some decent sized creases due to the seat frame being bent during inspection/removal (no rips etc). Although I didn't think it'd take 3months from winning the auction bid. But oh well....
