How nice does this look? On loan from Nissan for the next week so will post my thoughts and answer (simple) questions. I live in a very hilly area in Sydney that has had a noticeable impact on my current LEAF’s range, will be very interested to see the real world range with the new model. 😎 Attachments:

After the first day: 1. I LOVE the e-pedal. Literally didn’t touch the break all day. 2. Sensors everywhere tell you if you’re too close on any side of the car, plus if you drift from your lane and haven’t indicated it gives a little buzz and vibration to wake you up. 3. Some cool voodoo camera stuff happening. They map and warp images from EVERY side of the car creating an image that appears to be taken from about 4 meters up, pointed down at the car and ground. I’ll take some photos or video to illustrate, it’s really cool. 4. Feels quite a bit more spacious than our current gens. The boot space is definitely much bigger. 5. Makes me smile every time I look down and see the range. With my 7 year old battery by the end of the day I’m always plugging it in for night. Tonight we got home and still had 240km on the guessometre.

Here’s a shot of the camera angles. It shows a 360 degree view of the car, as if viewing from above, with warnings if you are getting close on any side. You can turn the camera on at any time with a dedicated button on the panel and it comes on automatically when you put the car in reverse. Very cool, extremely useful! Attachments:

Will let you know when I finally drain the battery but at the moment I’m headed for a real-world range of about 250km. A lot of hills and have used the air con quite a bit. Attachments:

Thanks Jim. Good to know those features and results. I saw that same car at the Melbourne EVExpo in March. The line to test drive it was an hour long, so I took the Zoe for my second spin. Wished I'd waited, but there was so much to see and do. Looking forward to testing it in Canberra in August.

Did you find the ride a bit firmer? May have just been the French roads but it felt more positive in that one.

It's been amazing to have early access to it, finding new little gems all the time!

The extended range is incredible. So amazing to drive for several days and still find yourself with more range than a fully charged 2012 model! I couldn't actually drain it fast enough to do an exhaustive test, but from my calculations I would have got around 235KM from the charge. Again, lots of hills and I didn't skimp on the aircon. ;-)

A Nissan Canberra dealer rang me this week to say they'd have one in August with the introductory price of $53K having all the features of the top of the range model. Do you reckon 270km on one charge is feasible?

Do you reckon 270km on one charge is feasible? It will depend greatly on topography and driving conditions. We live in a pretty hilly area and I used the air con almost exclusively and we got closer to 235-240km on a charge. I would say 250 is feasible under normal conditions, but 270 would require very careful driving using the e-pedal only, and on level ground.

Would be interesting to know how the range is on a highway is at a sustained 110km/h.
At this price bracket there's quite a few full electric options..
Off the top of my head: Model 3 Zoe Kona Ioniq.
Anyone that's seriously considering or already committed to buying this next gen leaf, what reasons did you have to choose over the rest?

I've had the opportunity to share the new Leaf with Jim and after having it for a few days I have few things to add: 1. It definitely feels like a premium hatch which helps justify its price tag. Everything feels improved from the firmer ride to the more upmarket interior. 2. The steering wheel has a lot of buttons which took some effort to get used to. I like the look of it and it feels great to hold but I like the simplicity of the old one. 3. As Jim said there's loads of tech and I haven't had time to go through it all. I'm not a fan of the analogue speedo but you can set the info screen to show a digital speedo. 4. This can't be repeated enough but the added range is so good. We drove from Sydney to Canberra on the weekend using the free NRMA fast charger in Mittagong. Such a trip isn't practical in a gen 1 Leaf at present. 5. Radar assisted cruise control made highway driving so easy. I'm going to miss that when I return it. 6. The Bose stereo is noticeably better. As we drove out of Sydney and the FM radio started to lose reception I switched to DAB and it sounded crystal clear again. I wish we had DAB. Attachments:

^^^ hmmm, the features you liked from both leafs (gen 1 and gen3) you just described is what I own (gen 2) but it cost exactly half the price.
mine is a 2016/2017 spec gen 2 30kw battery Radar cruise control with lane departure warning Bose with 360 cam and DAB+, I replaced the Japanese headunit with an English version and it came with DAB+.

That's a compelling argument. I guess it comes down to budget and personal preference. The new Leaf does look pretty good inside and out (it's been growing on me more as I've had it in my garage for a few days) and the added range might be a deciding factor. There's also the matter of battery replacement from Nissan, but the EV scene in Australia will be different when it's time for a new battery in 5-8 years.

How was this trip in terms of range and charging? What level did you charge to at Mittagong? What consumption rate did you get, and at what speed? What SOC did you have on arrival at Canberra? Thanks

I didn't keep a record of all the stats but I can tell you I made the mistake of not spending enough time charging at Mittagong. I was only there for the amount of time it took to get a coffee and left with around 74% charge (around 172km on the GOM, I think). The fact that Canberra is around half a km above sea level and the highway speeds meant I only just made it. It's a rookie mistake, I should have stayed an extra few minutes but I was keen to hit the road.
Another fast charger in Goulburn would be perfect.
Returned the Leaf this morning. I'm both happy to be back to routine but sad that the experience has come to an end.

Great that you've both had a chance to drive the new Leaf.
Interested to know did Nissan Australia offer you the new Leaf to drive as early evangelists for the original Leaf, because you've placed a pre-order for the new Leaf or something else?
Thanks

The former. I wouldn't have thought leaving positive comments on their Facebook page would go so far. Plus Jim's the first private owner and made a video about it years ago so he's got some cred.
No plans to upgrade mine. Like my previous car I want to see how long I can keep it on the road for.

I wanted to ask if any owners of the 40kw Australian delivered (UK Built) Leaf have looked at the Firmware number for the BMS. After many complaints in Europe they updated the Firmware so you could rapid charge more times without a big loss in recharge speeds and it gave 4% more battery size. The Firmware Number to look for is 5SH2C. The Old BMS firmware number has an A where the C is. Also when you buy the Leaf do you just get a Type2 to Type2 Cable? If that is so aren't they selling you a car you can't charge unless you spent big money on a Wall Charger....perhaps Nissan should fit one as part of the sale.

I bought a 40KWH Leaf in December 2019 - so I'm very much on a learning curve. I wasn't aware it was built in the UK, but I'll take your word for it. I can't tell you the BMS Firmware Version, but doubtless will learn how to find that information given time. So far, I've driven about 2400km, and have only charged at home mostly at 16A 240V - using a YKS-ESNES charging cable (Schuko plug to Type 2). The car was supplied with both a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and a granny cable (10A fixed). The YKS-ESNES cable can be set from 6A to 16A in 1A steps, and I would heartily recommend it. For me, it's just my current solution before installing a 7KW charger at home. It's well priced on eBay, and a even more reasonable through AliExpress (I noticed that too late). I'm not a fan of fast charging Li batteries, but would love to hear what other Leaf Owners have to say on this topic. My concern is to try to keep my battery SOH high as long as I can.
My average consumption so far (over 2400km) is 14.5KWH/100km. This is with ePedal ON (always), Mode D or B set (these days, always mode B), and with the aircon ON (always) - I didn't buy the car to be uncomfortable, and Qld is averagely quite warm. While I experimented with ECO mode initially, I leave it off now. The car is so much nicer to drive without ECO mode in my opinion.
Regards to all you Leaf Drivers
John

I'm not a fan of the analogue speedo but you can set the info screen to show a digital speedo. Sorry for the very late post on this. The analogue speedo seems to show miles per hour (ewww), with km/h in small numbers inside it. Are you saying that this is all simulated on an LC Display, and you can get honest to goodness km/h all by themselves in large numerals? I guess the default mph and km/h speedometer is a consequence of these models being made in the UK.

My lifetime average over 5 years is 142 Wh/km, almost always driving in Eco. So 145 is good with AC on and non-Eco.

Thank you Johngipps . There is a few videos on YouTube on how to access the service area slightly complicated but you should be able to ask the Nissan Service Department to find it for you. You should be able to find where the car was built on the plate where your VIN number is. I'm glad they supply a granny cable as well. The 7kw Charger you are installing is it going to be a 16amp or 32 amp connection ? Having seen many videos on charging I recall a chart that puts the 30% to 70% charge amount as the one which will give the longest life. 20% to 80% isn't bad either. The basic rules to go by is try and charge on AC as much as possible as it doesn't heat the battery to high levels. Try not to charge too much as each charge is one less cycle for your battery life. The Ambient temperature (unless you park outside continually on hot days) has little effect on the battery temperature. Yes the Battery Temperature does affect you SOH and life cycle and its most affected by DC rapid charging. Can I ask how long it takes your 16a YKS lead to charge your car and how much faster is the 7kw charger going to be?

Try not to charge too much as each charge is one less cycle for your battery life. A charge cycle is the battery going from 100% to 0% and being charged back to 100%. A “charge” is not a “cycle” unless it is this. For example, if your car was charged daily from 60% to 80%, then it would take 5 days to complete a charge “cycle”. If the battery was good for 80% retained capacity after 3000 charge cycles, this battery would theoretically be good for 41 years. YMMV.

Do you use the foot park brake ? Yes I do, I've come to really like it. I've forgotten to release it a few times, and in Reverse, you hardly notice it's on if you back out slowly - in Forward, it seems much more effective. The car does eventually inform you.
