The Model 3 is a remarkable piece of engineering. Clinical execution of minimalism with amazing performance and technology integration. Good description! I pick up my model 3 this Friday - I expect I will fall asleep in it Friday night (in the garage) so I hope it's comfortable I am sure you will. I picked up mine last Wednesday and I kept going to the garage for something on the Model 3. I have difficulties in stopping myself wanting to drive it. In case you are not aware of, the car comes with a wall charger and a UMC with 10A & 15A tail. With 10A tail, the car can charge only up to 8A. With 15A tail, the car can charge only up to 12A. There are no USB phone charge cables included in the car.

Mind you because I’m moving house soon I’ve asked him to just make it a temporary install or just plug into 15A GPO and mount on wall so I can easily take it with me. I’ll probably take the kids to Byron or somewhere on the weekend to really put it to the test. Reserved 31st March 2016 so it has been a long wait but I’m sure it will be worth it.

If you have an existing 3.7kW EVSE for your LEAF, you can consider buying a Type 1 to Type 2 adaptor (~$230) and use the EVSE to charge at 15A. You can use the adaptor in any ChargePoint chargers. I assumed you don’t need to charge the cars at the same time. Otherwise, I would just use the UMC with 15A GPO. It is not fast but it should be good enough for us ex-LEAF drivers who can’t drive too far with our LEAF. BTW, there is a bundle discount in JetCharge website. A Type 1 to Type 2 adaptor + Type 2 cable (to be used in, such as, ChargeFox Type 2 chargers) is $495. I brought one and received it today. The cables are very thick and in good quality.

The cable is USD 135 which is about AUD 200. The design looks the same but the cable is different from the one sold in JetCharge. It doesn’t mean it is a poorer quality product. I just cannot tell if it is the same as the one in JetCharge. Assuming you use a credit card without foreign currency fee and the custom do not ask for GST (which they should), it is only AUD 20 cheaper (i.e., AUD 220 from JetCharge vs 200 from China) if I only buy the J1772 to Type 2 adaptor. If there are any damages caused by the cable from AliExpress, there may be issues / hiccups in insurance claim. For at most AUD 20 saving, I personally don’t feel it is worth taking the risk. Furthermore, I have huge concern on giving my details to any Chinese entities after the mess still happening in Hong Kong. China is obviously collecting data and they have the legal right to ask any Chinese company to give any data collected to the them. They are using technologies to keep track of everyone. They even force Hong Kong people to give their DNA samples when they cross the border. I don’t want to go too much into politics. I don’t want to sell my address, email, etc, to China for $20. At the end, it is our own choice. Alternatives are always good. Thanks for the AliExpress link

I wish they made the gender-opposite version, i.e. type-2 to J1772. Then I could use it on tethered type 2 cords, including Tesla destination chargers. But somehow, it never seems to be made.

Well, I finally succumbed on Sunday and pulled the trigger on Model 3. LR AWD, white. A Tesla birdy basically told me to not hold my breath for white interior to be made available in Australia on anything other than Performance. So I decided that exiting the fossil fuel economy sooner rather than later is more important than waiting for a white interior that may never arrive. So... will Tesla’s prediction of a “late November” delivery materialise or not?! I am not holding my breath on that one either. But I won’t be one of those obsessives looking at their Tesla Account HTML code seeing if a hidden VIN has been allocated or ringing the Tesla office every second day asking “where’s my car”? I will keep my LEAF but the fact that no other manufacturer has come out since 2014 with a BEV that has the range and features of Tesla Model 3 is a bit of an indictment on the legacy automakers. The next best BEV offering is Hyundai Kona with (allegedly) 400 km range and $65k sticker price but that doesn’t quite cut the mustard as a primary car and of course no Supercharger network. And their website warns of “extended delivery timeframes”. Possibly even worse than Tesla?!! And of course the new LEAF, while much better than the old LEAF, is still disappointing in a number of ways. So Nissan has lost another customer to Tesla. I’ll report back in when I get a delivery date!

I ordered a LR AWD in white on 28/8. (Reservation date was Aug 2016). I was told October. I have been looking at the source code but am not one of those that has been hassling Tesla constantly. On 22/10 I called the sales rep to ask for an updated delivery timeframe. (I tried calling the service centre first but I was twice put through to the correct extension and then waited on hold for a few minutes then got an answering machine. I left a message, waited an hour then called the sales centre.) So the sales rep said that she would make a few calls and get back to me. And she did. On 23/10 she told me that there would still be a long wait on the LR AWD. She said "maybe December". But she did offer to upgrade me to a P- (aka "Stealth Performance "). This car looks the same as a LR AWD but has the upgraded inverters and slightly more powerful motor and the software allows the performance acceleration. The upgrade was offered at no cost and also had the advantage of the car actually being in the country! I said yes. Delivery call came on 24/10 with delivery date offered from 31/10. I will be taking delivery on 5/11.
So Evangelist, I am not hopeful for your November estimate. I suggest that you downgrade your expectations to January.
(But, the Kona lead time was 6mo unless you were willing to take one that they already had in inventory.)

But Tesla also told me a few weeks ago (before I ordered) that all VINs of all cars in country had been allocated, so there was no P3D- “inventory” that I could just waltz in and buy. Maybe I need to visit Tesla in Martin Place... So Evangelist, I am not hopeful for your November estimate. I suggest that you downgrade your expectations to January. I don’t have any expectations. I was being somewhat sarcastic about November. The car will turn up when it turns up But, the Kona lead time was 6mo unless you were willing to take one that they already had in inventory. I take Hyundai’s “extended delivery timeframes” to mean “we have no freakin’ idea when they will turn up”

The upgrade at no extra cost to the stealth performance.. what a bonus! Kind of off sets the wait perhaps? I wonder if I walked into the store in Chadstone and took a sales person aside, would I be able to buy an inventory Stealth Performance at LR AWD prices? hmmm.....

Did you order the P- or were you one of the lucky long range orders offered an upgrade? I’m finding myself driving for the sake of driving which I’ve never done in my life... easily tripled my monthly average mileage. Hopefully the novelty will wear off soon or I’ll need to update my insurance 😊

I definitely was one of the lucky ones offered the upgrade to P-! Acceleration in Sport mode is sick (like literally sickening). I find myself mostly enjoying the chill mode, unless I feel the need to express my inner bogan. Shortly after your initial post I asked Tesla if they could help me out likewise, but the answer was no You must have got the last unallocated P- in the country. So I am waiting for the LR AWD that I ordered. On the Tesla website, it shows Feb delivery for SR+ and P, but still shows Dec for LR AWD. Apparently no LR AWDs have been delivered here yet, not even for those who jumped in on day 1 when the config was first made available in July. Which implies that it’s the least-ordered config and Tesla will batch up all orders from July to early Nov to manufacture and deliver in Dec. While they could push it out even further, maybe they figured 6 months is the most they could make anyone wait for their order.

I'm sorry to say that I sold my Nissan LEAF over the weekend. I was very sad to see him go (even though I adore the Tesla model 3). My LEAF has been a great car. Completely reliable and enjoyable to drive. I'm sure his new owners will be happy with their purchase.

Exactly 2 months from ordering to delivery is pretty good. But it’s been 3.75 years since reserving It’s soooo exciting... I am really looking forward to driving this car and saying “good riddance” to petrol forever! And being able to drive an EV to all the places previously inaccessible with the LEAF... it will be a whole new world!

My leaf (sparky) is in Nissan at the moment for a final service and road worthiness certificate in readiness for it to go on car sales to find its next owner.
My Model 3 P- is awesome (some paint niggles to be sorted by a Tesla approved paintshop) - the 560km range is transformational, the traffic aware cruise control is really clever - and then autopilot steps it up again with controlling the steering.
I'll be sad to see my 2012 leaf go -but we had 7 good years out of it, and it started / cemented my interest in EV's - but since it's range is limited, it cant be the big journey car for us.... time to recoup some money from the LEAF before its value completely nosedives as more and more EV's come on the market with a range that wipes the floor with Gen 1 leaf.

... time to recoup some money from the LEAF before its value completely nosedives as more and more EV's come on the market with a range that wipes the floor with Gen 1 leaf. That is exactly my thinking. Unfortunately I'm still not there yet (ability to spend whopping 50k and above for a car), so I'm either: - Sell mine now and get an import (to get 30kWh model);
- Wait until next year (to drop 4-bar) and get 10-ish grand battery replacement
The thinking behind it: I'll sell mine now super cheap (under 15k). With extra 10k (battery replacement cost) can get me a nice 30kWh import (well, need to throw in another 3~5k). This option will give me a way better leaf than gen-1 (I really really like the remote AC on though).
