You can tell interest in the LEAF is slowly increasing; just this month alone we've had five new members join. In the past few years you would get about one every month or two. I'm guessing it's a combination of the new model coming soon(ish) and new used owners (both Australian delivered and grey market). So this is a collective welcome to the recent members. This place isn't as active as it used to be save for a few stalwart regulars, so it's nice to inject some life into the forum.

Sixth new member! Welcome johnmath! Thank you for your welcome, Feng. I'm here to imbibe in the wisdom of Leaf Owners Forum members with the intention of importing a Leaf in the very near future. We live in a remote location off the electricity grid, using solar PV and battery bank for household power. The standalone renewable energy system is designed to give us enough power in the winter months, which means that for most of the year we have vastly more electricity available than we can use. Most days the batteries are on float by 10 am or even earlier. This has led us to explore electricity as a fuel for agricultural pumps, chainsaws, mowers, etc. An electric car is another obvious choice to use this spare electrical capacity. The Leaf seems to be reliable and inexpensive to own, with good support for future replacement batteries. We are both retired with very modest finances so low running costs are just as important as stepping off bandwagon of modern society with its fossil energy powered everything. On Kangaroo Island where we live there are not many electric cars but quite a few charging stations thanks to a visionary local council. The island is 145 kilometres end to end and a return trip from our place to the main town where we shop once a month is 150 kilometres. This should be do-able with a top-up charge whilst we are shopping. As a backup we have our high clearance diesel 4WD which we plan to run on vegetable oil.

Welcome Johnmath. Before I bought my Leaf in March 2015, I spent many hours reading the posts here. It gave me a much more accurate idea of what the Leaf was like than I could get from Nissan, and it is great to draw on the collected wisdom. Are there any other EV owners on Kangaroo Island? An island seems like the perfect place for an EV.

Energy independence alone is a very compelling reason to transition to EV!

Are there any other EV owners on Kangaroo Island? I know of a couple of Mitsubishi electric cars and there are a few hybrids locally owned and in the rental fleets. Islanders tend to have old cars due to road conditions. Here a shiny car is best treated with respect as it is probably a tourist and likely to be driven by someone used to being on the other side of the road!

Here a shiny car is best treated with respect as it is probably a tourist and likely to be driven by someone used to being on the other side of the road! I was on holiday on Kangaroo Island a few months ago - lovely spot. We drove our own car there (ICE) but I noticed the Chargepoint chargers and uploaded some photos of the ones at Penneshaw and Parndana to Plugshare since there were no photos. There was a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV plugged into the Penneshaw one the day we arrived. My Chargepoint card did not unlock the cable at the Parndana one - the diagnostic menu said the station was connected to GSM but GSM was closed more than a year ago. No comms no unlocking?? I should report it so that it is investigated. A return trip of 150 km to the shops would be challenging in a LEAF even with these chargers. An imported LEAF with say 10 bars of battery will have a range of 100-120 km. Depending how fast you want to drive, you’ll chew up most of that getting to the shops. If charge is down to 2 bars, it would take around 4 hours to charge the car back up to 100% at 7 kW charging. If that works for you great, but it means a day trip more or less. I love my LEAF and enjoy it more than any car I’ve ever driven, but I understand its limitations and use it only for city driving. I have to wait until I get Tesla Model 3 next year to have a car that can replace my ICE.

The EV drivers here on KI get a bad rap for sitting on 60ks on the highway - for range, of course! I had a drive of a local's 5 year old i-Miev with ~70,000k the other day. The owner loves it and the car is surprisingly torquey up the steep hill out of Penneshaw. I'll be keeping our pre-common rail diesel for off road and long range trips, with a view to doing a veg oil conversion.

A lot of people get impatient sitting behind me at 60-70 km, but I have to laugh when they fly past me and then lock up their brakes as a roo nearly comes through their windscreen.

If the car is in Australia it sounds like that vehicle was exported before getting the recall software update done, type the VIN into the Nissan JP recall website and see what the status is before it got shipped.
www.nissan.co.jp/RECALL/search.html
If it needs an update, call your local Nissan dealer to see if they will update it for you for a fee.

The answer was No not subject to recall . Thank You for your reply. The car only has 28,940 ks so if it has had 390 QC and 199 L1/L2 charges that must indicate it was charged every 50 Ks? SOH is 70.42% but the GOM says 150 ks. My head is about to explode. The looks like new and drives great. At $32K it could be a real big mistake if the battery is on the way out!

The 2016 Leaf should be a good one and shouldn't be that bad. 390QC (quick charge), in my naive opinion, shouldn't kill the battery that bad. I'm suspicious it's a software issue ( click here for more details). Unfortunately, I doubt the local dealer here in Australia can fix that issue for you (if that is the issue). In saying that, can you confirm that is the 30kWh model that you're trying to buy? If it is, for how much? If it's in the low 20k, I'd snap it right away. As the degradation shouldn't be too bad after that (you won't use as much QC as the previous owner, if that is the real issue). That leaf has newer battery chemistry, it's a bargain for low 20k (AUD). I myself would by it even if it's at 25k.

are you talking about the orange one in QLD? if so, can you post the VIN as age wise it should be in the bracket requiring a software update. NZers where able to update software privately and through Nissan.
