G'day everyone I'm daydreaming about buying what the Carsales.com.au seller claims is the only used Leaf for sale in Queensland. Problem is, it's unregistered and in Brisbane, whereas I'm in Canberra. Has anyone here bought a Leaf sight unseen, had it trucked interstate, and been able to get it registered? I can certainly get it trucked, but don't want to be left with a brick at my place if I can't get it registered in the ACT. Any advice would be welcome. best wishes Paris

Any advice would be welcome. best wishes Paris Hi Paris, Good on you for considering buying a Leaf. I bought mine sight unseen from a dealer in WA. In fact it wasn’t even advertised and the dealer actually went to Nissan’s inventory to find it. I was provided with lots of photographs of the vehicle before I decided to go through with the purchase. The point of difference is that my car when I bought it still had about 9 months of the factory warranty left so if anything went wrong, I had a short grace period where it would be rectified. In this instance, I assume the 3 year factory warranty period has lapsed, you might be relying on the dealer’s statutory warranty period (3 months from memory). Because this is dealer specific, if anything were to go wrong you’ll have to sort it out with the seller dealer direct rather than just approach your local Nissan dealership. Do your preliminary work by running the VIN through the PPSR website to make sure the car hasn’t been reported as a write off and check if there is any finance on it. It’s a cheap check for peace of mind at around $4. Nothing beats seeing the car in person so if you can reach out to some one in QLD who might be able to inspect the car on your behalf, that might help you out. Once I received my car in Melbourne from Perth, I took it to my local Nissan dealer and got a Victorian Roadworthy Certificate, took that certificate and the purchase receipt to my local vicroads office, paid them the applicable charges and was issued local number plates and I was driving. It was a pretty simple process actually. One small detail is that in order to drive my unregistered Leaf, I had to buy a short term ‘unregistered vehicle permit’, I’m sure there is an ACT equivalent. I bought insurance for the Leaf using my car’s VIN number and advised the insurance company of the registration after I was issued with it. So I guess the process of buying and registering an interstate car isn’t too complex, it’s more the confidence you have with the car itself. For that I would recommend perhaps getting a person based in QLD to go to the dealer and actually look at and drive the car on your behalf. If that’s not possible, then at least you are buying from an established dealership which must give you a statutory warranty with the car and therefore one would assume go through checks before offering a car for sale. I would ask that even though the car is going to be registered in ACT, that prior to selling the car, the dealer prep the car as if it were going to be registered in QLD because the safety requirements are very similar state to state, that means by the time the car reaches you, hopefully minimal work and cost will be required to pass the ACT safety inspection process. I hope this helps, certainly with the minimal supply of Leafs around the country. Keen potential buyers are having to scout the country to secure their Leaf. Best of luck with your search and hope you are driving a Leaf in the near future.

Not a Leaf, but I purchased our SUV sight-unseen from Vic (we are in NSW) due to the options we were after (poverty pack manual for fuel economy). I got the nearby RACV to inspect it (cheap if you are or claim to be an NRMA member), and then a Victorian Rego inspection (also not expensive). It was then trucked to NSW where I took the Vic paperwork to my mechanic who had to do the NSW Rego inspection (took about 5 minutes as be had another one in his hands from less than a week earlier), off to pay extortionate stamp duty then got our plates. Main trick is to make sure you are negotiating a price that doesn't include the interstate Rego or stamp duty work, as it's irrelevant back in your state.

Hi pharmadave and alison, thanks both for your good advice. Much appreciated. Initial plan involved heading to Melbourne to test drive your Leaf, Dave! Glad you found a buyer. I'll ask a Brisbane mate to test it for me, and check out the PPSR site. Think I'd better join the NRMA, too, especially to take advantage of their coming charger network. alison, the dealer has said he'd waive the rego and stamp-duty state, and put it on a truck for $870 to my door. It's a good sign that Leafs for sale are rare - a testament to their quality I guess.

Funny you should say that, the potential buyer for my Leaf has gone 'radio silent' and not responding to any emails/messages/phone calls. So in the event that the sale falls through I've relisted the car on car sales. So I guess if anyone is interested, the car is still available unless the buyer contacts me.

We bought ours from Sydney and had it shipped to the Sunshine Coast for $600. No issues, just had to register here.

Hi all, thanks for your suggestions. Had a friend in Brisbane test drive it today. Car goes well "It's like a from Back to the Future!" she said while driving it. My only real concern is replacing the battery if it degrades rapidly in two years. It's on 83% now. Will post more in the battery thread. Cheers.
