Can't let Tesla owners have all the fun with EV road trips. Finally our time has come!

Lucky you - I saw your car and arm on the news, but the rest presumably ended up on the cutting room floor ! I also participated in a NRMA survey recently regarding fast chargers so it was clear something was happening. I hope this actually gets done properly with chargers in the right locations eg amenities, spacing distance on main routes etc. Overall a great initiative by the NRMA.

I did the NRMA survey too, but also indicated I was willing to be contacted. And they did contact me last week about their unspecified project, saying: "We are hoping to have the green light on next steps in November, and will roll out a program of work off the back of that. We would love it if you could be involved in providing feedback along the way. This may involve things like letting us know your views on communications materials, app development, networks, or providing feedback on your issues or ideas in the electric vehicle space."
So I suspect they will be seeking my input on exactly these types of questions - where to put the chargers, near what kinds of amenities, practical advice on what EV drivers need, etc. I'll let you know what happens! I can also gather feedback and ideas here and consolidate for NRMA.

Works well. No access card needed. Charged at 10 kWh.

The next step in the NRMA survey is a closed "discussion board" where the people who indicated willingness to participate further can submit their thoughts and ideas on the questions posed. They have 4 questions there: - Current EV Driving Trips - Where outside of the Sydney metro area are you currently driving your EV? How regularly are you driving there?
- Places you would like to go in an EV - Where outside of Sydney do you not travel to, but would like to, because of a lack of fast charge sites?
- Fast Charge Network - where to start? - If the initial phase of the rollout was up to a dozen sites, where would you place those sites to help facilitate road trips and reduce range anxiety?
- Where else in Sydney should we target? - In addition to the site that we have established at our HQ in Sydney Olympic Park, where in Sydney would be the most valuable place/s to install a fast charger site?
I've tossed in my 2c worth - is there anything specific anyone here would like me to add? There only seems to be about 8 participants so it's a pretty small sample.

Used the Olympic Park DCFC for the first time today, it's a fair bit faster than Wollongong at over 40kW when I first connected. Went from 5 bars to 11 in about 20 minutes.
It didn't seem to want to go to 12 bars, but perhaps I misunderstood the "80% / Max" button on the charger so will experiment again next time. I had the light behind Max but it wouldn't charge above 85%. Normally I get to 91-93%. This matters for a return uphill journey of over 80kms.
But as I've seen pointed out elsewhere the cable it too short - well worth feeding back to them if somebody can! We had to park just so to make it reach. They need to get this right if they are rolling out a network.
Speaking of which, anyone heard any updates or a proposed site list?

I contributed to their Q&A forum a couple of months ago, but I've heard nothing since. Hopefully the rollout will begin soon...

www.plugshare.com/location/154457Looks like Wallsend is almost ready. Anyone up for a road trip to Newcastle? I hope they see regular usage and won't get vandalised.

Mittagong is up and running now. I got back this afternoon from doing some photos and stuff with NRMA.
I charged at Andy's place on the way up with the Setec, so that went fairly easily. But I wanted to come home in one jump, thinking I'd be ok because of the down hill run. Wrong. I made the mistake of doing 80kph most of the way and only just made it.
Anyway, the route to Canberra is one step closer to reality.
Cheers,
Mark

I'm worried I'll arrive one day and the pokie brigade will have ICEd the single spot. We usually take the scenic back road through Yerrinbool to/from Mittagong.

I got the impression you can park in front or behind the charger and there are two spots on either side?

I got the impression you can park in front or behind the charger and there are two spots on either side? From the photos I can see the cable might reach to the other side for a possible two spots, but don't appear long enough to reach across to the next two spots. Anyway its a great expansion that we will test out shortly. Keep them coming!

Sorry you're right, it looks like it's just one spot on each side.

I got the impression you can park in front or behind the charger and there are two spots on either side? From memory at the back, there is only one side spot, on the CCS-2 side. The side spots may not work all the time as they are a bit of a stretch.

That would be even better for you, if it happens! Have you tried going to Wollongong Uni Fastcharger yet? I recon you should be able to get there and back ok. You really are at the centre of everything aren't you. cheers, Mark

Next one we really need is say Emu Plains to open up the mountains. Local counsellor was in the media about a charger in Picton a few months ago. I got in touch but never heard any more. A DCFC would be great for local businesses.

I'm really glad to see this kicking along. After being stung more than once at the old North Strathfield one....is there any way to check it these are online/workign before setting off? At 70klm this is just a little too far from our place at freeway speeds but it is great to see the extra options appearing at last

Sometimes the car will stop the charge even tho the charger is ok to keep charging. Unplug and try again. All NRMA chargers are 50kW capable, so you should go as fast as your battery pack allows. les

They also listed Young and Narrandera as under construction yesterday. Those are pretty far out and won't be easy to get to for us.
