In this area you can post questions or tips on driving the LEAF.
If your confused about how the controls work or if you have discovered a cool tip to share, post it here!

Hi Jim, Thanks for kicking off the Leaf forum.
To all the Leaf owners out there make sure you get a good solar system to back up Nissan's claim of zero emissions.Coal ain't clean. Some sums for all the Leaf owners 12Hour charge time cost 24kW hours of electricity. Or another way to look at it is 2000W for 12 hours. If you charge during the day a 6kW solar system will average 24kW hours a day in producing electricity. Therefore your Leaf will cost nothing to drive 120kms per day. If you charge at night then a 6 kW system will export into the grid at 8ckW hour and if your on time in use electricity tariff you will pay around 10c kW hour. Therefore it will cost you 48 cents to drive 120kms per day. If anyone has any questions please feel free to call us at Blue Mountains Solar. We would love to take your call.

Great to have you here, great resource!
We have a 6.1kW system on the roof. So are we better off to charge our LEAF during the day? We work from home so we are using electricity during the day but I wouldn't know how to measure how much.
At the moment we've been charging overnight using offpeak, on the assumption that it's better.
Would love your advice on this.

We have a 5.5 kW solar PV system, and relatively low daily kms of the Leaf. The way our tariffs work in W.A., we pump into the grid during the day, and draw / charge at night - I like the on-board charger timer system. With the electric motor bike, I have charged through a 10 Amp kWhr meter for years, and measure / record the kWhrs per charge. ( I recognise that the unit is cheap and not hugely accurate - but it gives me an idea ). Now I am looking for the same sort of thing in 15 Amp for the Leaf.

I agree with bmsolar wholeheartedly. In fact, with rising electricity prices throughout the country, to buy an all-electric car without some form of solar PV does not make economic, let alone environmental, sense to me. My next project is an off-grid system, primarily to charge the EVs.
