During winter months, the climate control seems to take over and has a mind of its own.
I often want to increase the fan speed to pull in more air from the outside without the climate control automatically turning on, thinking it knows better than me what I am trying to do.
During summer that seems to happen no problems - adjusting the fan speed does not turn climate control on. But during winter, bizarrely, it seems impossible to adjust fan speed without the climate control turning itself on. And if you then manually turn climate control off, the fan speed drops back to the minimum setting. Grrrr!
It is driving me nuts!!! How do I adjust the fan speed and keep climate control in its box, firmly turned off?

Sorry, not an available feature. In fact you can't turn the heater off either....your only actually control is to turn off AC (no real impact in winter) or turn off the whole system

You have to have climate control on, auto or manual to use the fan control. If I want some air, I press On/Off then adjust fan speed. If I turn off climate air with On/Off, then turn it on again with On/Off it resumes with the last settings, whatever they are. This is quite reliable. Try turning your climate air on with Auto, then turn off A/C if on, set your airflow, fan speed, air temperature and Mode. The Auto light should now be off after any change to a setting. Turn climate air off with the On/Off button, then turn on again with the On/Off button. Your new settings should apply. You should at this point be able to increase fan speed without anything else happening automatically (apart from the heater which will come on any time the ambient temperature is below 18C).

I don't mean "auto light on", I mean climate control is reported as being "on" in the energy stats menu. It turns itself on as soon as I adjust the fan speed (in winter). The clue to my experience is your comment "the heater which will come on any time the ambient temperature is below 18C". I suspected something like that was going on, but didn't know for sure. It seems silly to me that you can't just adjust the fan speed without any other A/C or heating elements deciding they need to join the party. It's just a fan, it should be able to run by itself!!

It doesn't run by itself so I don't use it any of the aircon system ever, it makes me so annoyed. At least I save the cost of having the aircon filter changed

You might be interested then, in this link for taking "charge" of the heater..... The fan, A/C and heater are the three active elements of the climate air system, and are integrated into it - you can only access any of these by turning on climate air. You can then turn the fan and A/C off and on, but not the heater. So you WILL get the Climate Air message on the centre console indicating the effect on range, but if you only have the fan on (with the energy consumption gauge showing zero), then the indicated range reduction is wrong; the fan energy consumption is negligible.

So if the dash says 19C set the climate air to 18C etc. It is only when the dash reading is 17C or less that you can't do this as the minimum climate air temperature setting is 18C.

I've got a switch installed that tricks the sensor into believing the coolant is at temperature resulting in no power being used to heat up the coolant. This website has what I've used. betterev.tabetalt.no/The other way around it is to disconnect the temp probe...

I've seen similar before on another vehicle. Our Red iTech Prius did the same trick, and gripped my wife & I quite regularly. Anyway, as it continued, I continued my quest for a solution that didn't involve resorting to modifications to the climate control service. I found that the dealer diagnostics can change the feature, and promptly had it changed. Problem solved. Now I haven't had occasion to tinker with the Nissan Dealer Diagnostics as yet, but I would suggest finding a sufficiently knowledgable tech, and posing the question. Btw, I'm in the process of obtaining the Diags, but eta is unknown at present. If you don't have success, I'll have a delve around in our vehicles settings, and post back when I have tried.

I've found all climate control systems in all cars that I've owned to be a major PITA.
The best climate control system in any of the vehicles I own is in the Ford Ranger. It's only a base model so it only has the manual ventilation controls and it works better than any climate control system I've used.

Further to this one. I was pouring over the manual this morning, and noticed that one can change the initial air intake mode in Automatic. Chapter 4, page 5, third column, second paragraph.
I had this problem, and no actual documentated method to change it on another CANBUS car.... And it insisted on using A/C no matter what. Solved it eventually by using similar button prodding. Maybe that's the fix. Indiscriminate button prodding. :•|
