I love all the thoughtfulness that has gone into the Leaf. For instance it surprised me by locking itself after I unlocked it and then didn't open the door. I forgot and went about doing other things, then after a minute I heard a lick and the car had rel-locked itself. Great for forgetful people like me!

Never done that, but have tried to lock the door with the key still in the car, and it won't and it tells me so

You can successfully lock yourself out of the car though. The other day I wanted to lock my son inside the car with the aircon on.
I came up with the great idea to power on the car (in non-drive mode), open the driver's window, lock the car using the central locking switch and close the window with the auto-close function.
Well, it worked. Car locked with aircon on.
When it was time for me to get back into the car, with the key in my pocket, I pressed all the door open buttons - nothing. I tried to unlock the car with the key - nothing. I couldn't open the car from the outside. NOT such a great idea then.
In the end, I had to get my son to climb into the driver's seat and open the doors with the central locking button.
I won't do that again.

It will only lock itself after a minute if you unlock the car and then do nothing. As soon as you do anything (open the door, etc) the auto-lock is cancelled.

Actually, I didn't think of using the manual key that pulls out of the key fob. I might do an experiment and see if the key would have opened the door.

Tested it today. Under the conditions listed above, with car locked, none of the electronic methods would open the car BUT The manual key did open the door. However, I don't feel as if the aircon is very effective with the car in that mode. The car definitely becomes noticeably cooler when you drive off.
Wonder why.

Tested it today. The manual key did open the door. Well, that's a relief

It almost feels like it running on half power. Or when on an ICE car you turn the key just before you start the engine and the air comes out but it's not really that cold. I've used it a few times and noticed and difference once I turn the car on properly.

The A/C compressor only turns on when the car is in drive mode. When I took it to an auto electrician to have the A/C looked at we found that out because I was trying to convince him the A/C was on before realising the car wasn't in drive mode. Otherwise it's just blowing the cabin fan. Alternatively you can turn the car off and use your smartphone app to turn on the A/C but it only runs for 15 minutes unless it's plugged in, then it'll stay on for (I think) three hours.

The heating and cooling also works on rapid DC charge as well. Have sat in a warm car at CHADEMO charging points in France. Very nice.
Cheers

I think this is a hangover fom ICE cars. I can't see any reason why an EV shouldn't have A/C just because the "Ignition" is off. There are plenty of times it would be nice. I guess it may need some safegards to ensure there is someone in the car, and you don't flatten the traction battery. Mark
