Wow, sorry to hear! The guy in Perth who lost his first bar under 5000km had his off the road for two months while they were working out what to do with it. Now it doesn't look like an isolated case. I hope Nissan looks after you. If Nissan swaps the car who's to say the replacement car won't have the same problem? Maybe if you're lucky they'll service the pack and put a few new modules in if that's possible. Or maybe they can reimburse you some amount to go towards a replacement pack in a few years? I doubt they'll be that generous but it would be nice if they did.

Wow, that stinks! My LEAF is at 38,500km and I still have all 12 bars and sitting on 89% capacity

Oh dear, this is shocking. Have you had any word back from Nissan on this?

Its starting to become clear that the 2012 cars are showing degradation issues even in "storage mode". They are unlikely to replace the whole car (in fact thats a rarity in the industry) but it could mean that these cars could get the updated pack installed which has the better chemistry...

The battery guarantee only covers capacity loss once four bars are lost (as in below 3 bars gone). I can't see anything in the warranty about premature loss of bars, although it is far from satisfactory for the owner after such a short time. It would be very interesting, P6Mk, to hear the outcome of this.

I felt bad at 15,000 losing a bar. Cycling at Nissan did nothing to restore range or the bar.

I think you'd have some sort of case with Nissan after so short a period of time. Its obviously not usual given the majority of owners do far more k's before a bar loss. Touch wood I'm at 22,000 and still full bars.

I emailed Dean and the dealer who were both very responsive. The car is going into the workshop next week for diagnostics. Otherwise I am very happy with the vehicle.

But in all fairness, it's really only been 2 problems. Oddly enough my car sent an email to me last night saying it was fully charged! So I turned on the heater with the app Still no word from them today

I left the Leaf overnight at the dealers so they could perform a charge/discharge cycle and run diagnostics. The report back is that cell 63 has failed and will need to be replaced. The specialised equipment necessary for this job isn't available here in Canberra so the dealer has submitted a technical bulletin to Nissan on whether the equipment can be sent here, or the car to Sydney. I'll keep you posted

That's good news isn't it? I don't think I've heard of anyone else in Australia getting their battery pack serviced. Are you curious to see what the pack looks like inside? Ask for photos or a tour or something?
If the car comes to Sydney can you tell us where it goes? I want to go take a squiz and can even take photos for you if you'd like!

So mixed news Nissan is prepared to fix it. Bad news is they may not be able to do it in a quick manner ?

Nissan have stated to me that they will do cell swaps.
The $64000 question is are there any Gen 1 cell still available new?
If not they will have to swap the pack with the updated version. I'm watching with interest...

Hi Feng,
she's booked in for a service later this month. I gave my dealer a reminder about the battery, so will wait to see what happens.
I'll keep you posted.

Hopefully will come back better than new. Love my Leaf and always sad to hear about bad experiences, though great that Nissan is taking care of you.

I think replacing the cell immediately without arguing is an awesome response from Nissan, total thumbs up from me.
And I wouldn't worry about some delay doing the swap, its not like it will affect your car long term or really affect you in the meantime

Hi Matt
We bought a 2012 Leaf last Nov 2015 through Lennock in Woden. Done 3800km, still 12 bars but I just used LeafSpy Pro for the first time and the SOH is 85% so it looks like we might lose one imminently. Range has rarely exceeded 120 on the GOM but we live on a hill (top of Narrabundah) which may explain that partly.
May I ask whether your problem was satisfactorily resolved in the end, and who in Canberra you worked with? Lennock Woden are pathetic in my experience - I never dealt with the same person twice and when the car went back as booked for the 1000 service they didn't even have a Leaf-qualified mechanic on duty and couldn't answer the one question I had (the low-speed pedestrian warning didn't/doesn't work - or I can't figure out how to make it work). My impression is they were just interested in unloading the stock and wanted as little as possible to do with it afterwards. But if I identify a serious issue I'll of course have to go back to them, at least to start with. And it sounds like you have had better experience with Nissan.
Hope you got a happy ending.
Рэгадз,
Joe

Just lost second bar @ 19000km, 2012 Leaf bought ( with one bar down @ 15000km) - also deeply disappointed since I should have known better and tested it with LSP *before buying and battery warranty unlikely to be able to be claimed against as it runs out at end of year.. Sigh.

So while it is disappointing, think of it this way. Your car is nearly 4 years old and has just lost second bar. If age is the dominant factor, that would mean that you'll still have 6 bars and a usable range of 60-70km in 2024. By then, if you wanted to replace the battery pack (and after-market replacements are available) you'd probably get one for under $1000 and with double the capacity!

Sigh. I thought your car will come with 8-year battery warranty or 100,000km (whatever comes first)? I vaguely remember had a letter from Nissan (to the previous owner) regarding this. I'd better dig that letter again. Not sure what the condition though (whether I need to do regular service etc) EDIT: Ooops, it's 5-year warranty (previous thread here: ozleaf.proboards.com/thread/343/free-extended-battery-coverage)

Lost my first bar at 4,000 km. If I drop my second bar before 20,000 km I'll be very unhappy.

A better way to think of it is you lost your first bar after 4 years, because that's how old the battery is. Bar loss is highly correlated with battery age and temperature extremes, not so much distance driven. It might be 2 years before you lose the next bar. And 2 more years for the bar after that etc.
