Sounds like something has gone very wrong. I'm guessing cycling won't help. You would expect some increase in capacity even if the balancing was out. I think that pack might have to come out again.

I think it will be fine, the battery management needs to count the kWh in and kWh out a few times to work out the capacity. But we shall see

Here's hoping. Is that how the battery management works out the capacity? I honestly don't know, but I guess it makes sense. Just reading amp hour might not be good enough and I guess the only real way of discovering a batteries capacity is to cycle it. It will be interesting to see what happens. Good luck🙂

My car is delayed again. They are contacting Nissan Australia on Monday. I forgot to ask how many capacity bars it reports. Nissan Tech support services says no more can be done? They did mention 100 km range, it was down to 90 km when I took it in. Also they mentioned someone up the sunshine coast way is getting a new battery pack. So some good news for warranty repairs, when (not if) your battery dips below 9 bars. I will post when they call next.

How frustrating after all these months.
I'm wondering who on the Sunshine Coast is getting a new battery pack? I only know one other Leaf owner up here other than StewartM. When you say battery pack, are you talking cell replacement, or whole battery replacement?

I have had a long term complaint in about battery loss and the failure of Nissan to advise of this clearly when the vehicle was marketed and sold. Haven't heard anything back for a while though.

It was a whole battery, not a repair. But no idea who it was.

Looks like a get a new battery. The repair fixed the disabled regen, but not the range. It will take approximately two months to arrive, so I am driving my LEAF again. Soooo much better than my old N16 pulsar.

I think just the labour of about $1,200 for the work previously done. Nissan decided to waive the hardware cost.

That's great news, congrats on the score Les! Wonder if the mechanic who worked on your car felt defeated after spending so much time troubleshooting the pack only to have it replaced?

Yeh, it was a giant pain. I can see why Nissan USA don't do repairs for loss of capacity.

Hi, I just got the Leaf back from Moorooka Nissan after its 3G upgrade and strut repair. The service guy mentioned that they are replacing "a couple" of batteries under warranty, but they are newer batteries with the lizard chemistry, that require slight modification (a frame?) to fit. More heat-resistant batteries would be good in Qld, or even just because of climate change. I'm two years in and two bars down, so I feel that I'll be likely to be eligible for a battery replacement before the 4 years/100 000km is up.

You mean 5 years/100,000km? I've got 11,000kms to lose around 2% capacity but the cooler weather has actually increased its capacity over the past few weeks. I can't bring myself to park my car in the sun either because it spent its first year in a storage yard and I'm paranoid about its clear coat fading prematurely. Its plastic trim already needs some reconditioning.

Here's my dilemma: I'm at 96k. My last service was at around 84k so it's overdue. I wasn't planning to service it any time soon because I don't think it needs it. Suppose I get lucky and lose the last bar to qualify for a warranty replacement. Will skipping that last service potentially void my warranty?
I'm now driving the car less to stretch it into spring or even summer, hoping the warmth will help.

When does your warranty run out? Mine already has. Oh, hang on a minute, the battery warranty is longer isn't it?

Yes the battery warranty is five years or 100,000km. I've got another 11 months but it's the kms that'll end it for me. As much as I enjoy driving the LEAF I'll have to cut down these next few months.

As much as I enjoy driving the LEAF I'll have to cut down these next few months. I've never actually found the details of the battery warranty written anywhere - I must not be looking in the right places? Can someone point me to the source document? Recently I noticed that we've lost our second bar. I really haven't been paying attention We've got only 26,000 km on the clock, we probably dropped the bar sometime in the last couple of months. However our Leaf is approaching 3 years of use, and if you count time since manufacture, nearly 5 years old. Is the warranty battery replacement trigger losing the 4th bar or 5th bar?

The battery life replacement details are here. www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=11043 I'll be running out of time before I run out of Kms - my 5 years is up the beginning of November but at this stage I've only lost 1 charge bar, so, hopefully I won't have a problem for a while.

Thanks Phoebe, although that seems to be the details of the warranty for USA? Do we definitely know that applies here too?

Hi Guys, Just an update about my LEAF's battery replacement under warranty due to capacity loss. After much testing and talking with Nissan Australia, my LEAF now has a new battery. The car underwent extensive testing and I was told that Nissan Japan had to give final approval. Great to know that Nissan stood by the warranty given it was such an expensive item. The maximum range is now back to the original 160 km on the guess-o-meter!

Congrats Richard, can I ask which dealer you had it done? Also, have you been getting your car serviced regularly? I mentioned elsewhere that I'm effectively skipping my final service and I'm a bit paranoid it could potentially void my battery warranty.

Richardh. Do you have a scan of the $30,000 quote ? Wow you're so lucky Richard! I always thought they would just replace a few modules for minimal effort. Which dealer did you go to? I just did a rough estimate and I might be on track for a replacement pack. Got ~15k to lose ~2%. I can't bring myself to abuse my car though. Hi Feng, I went to Steve Jarvin, but needed a few calls to Nissan Australia too. Was told the cost of the battery pack is $30,000. That is not a typo!

Hi Les, I am getting well down on range now. Question for you, have you have any repair body work done on your LEAF? Specifically repaint and baked in a paint oven?
I was told a few days ago that they are baked for 30-60 mins at 70 deg which will damage the LiIon battery. Looked it up in the owners manual as well; "In the event of an accident that requires body repair and painting, the vehicle should be delivered to a NISSAN certified LEAF dealer to have the Li-ion battery pack and high voltage parts such as the inverter, including the wiring harness, removed prior to painting. Li-ion battery packs exposed to heat in the paint booth will experience capacity loss. Damaged Liion battery packs may also pose safety risks to untrained mechanics and repair personnel."
