I find that the heating is not very good and takes a long time to work. Love driving the car. I live on the Mornington Peninsula and wonder if any other Leaf owners live nearby.

Hi Ruth, have you tried getting the car to pre heat itself while it is still plugged in in the morning? I live in lovely warm QLD, so I can't really comment on it's low temp performance

Hi Ruth, there's a few of us around Melbourne (we met recently at Swiburne uni for an Ev expo).
I'm up in Nunawading but get down in your direction to Frankston and back (my maximum comfort journey).
I've found the heater ok, not overly fast but ok. I
Welcome to the forum ! Tony

Hello and welcome ruth12. Have you considered setting a timer for the climate control or using your smartphone to pre-heat the car before getting into it? It also helps with the driving range if the car is still plugged in since it won't need to use the battery to warm up to operating temperature.

Hi and welcome to the forum! The heating works well and works fast, it just lowers the range. Jim Thank you Jim. I wonder what I am doing wrong then. I realize that it lowers the range but it takes ages to come through. Perhaps I am doing something wrong. Otherwise I love the Leaf. Just wish it went further. I am lucky enough to have the use of the car through my daughter who works for Nissan Australia. So I don't actually own the car but have it on lease for eighteen months. I find it the easiest car to drive and it is extremely comfortable, I am surprised at the power it has too. Previously I have owned a VW Golf TDI which was very fast and responsive, I didn't expect the a Leaf to measure up to the VW but it certainly does.

At least if you make it down here you can always charge it at my place if necessary. The heating isn't that important bit I do love the car.

Another VW convert! You're the third one here (that I know of). We were glad to get rid of our Golf after mechanical problems.
So does your daughter do anything involving the LEAF at Nissan?

Just a random thought, are you driving it in Eco or Drive mode?

Ruth, as a couple of people have pointed out, are you aware that you can set a timer or manually start the heating with a smart phone while the car is still plugged in? Don't even have to go out to the car.
This has two benefits, first of all the car will be toasty warm the moment you get in and second, you aren't using the battery because you're still on mains so you go further.

Hi Ruth,
My LEAF does the same thing in auto mode. You seem to get a big pause from the climate control (appears to be confused?). So I put it in D mode, put the temperature right up (24+) and turn the fan to low (auto orange light will turn off). Once it is going, I return to auto mode on a normal temperature setting (18-20 ish).
Also you can check the energy screen (Zero emissions button, then select energy info - green icon on the right) to see how much climate control power it is consuming. If it is heating up quickly, it should jump to between 3 and 4.5 KW in under a minute and once up to temperature, will drop to 1KW ish.

2012 models (listed as 2013 in Oz) can have heater issues Ruth, it seems to be related to the heater fluid temperature sensor, mine has quit altogether after 8 only 8 months. Checking the climate control kw on your energy screen will definitely tell you if the heater is drawing any power or not.

The heater is definitely a the biggest consumer in our generation of LEAFs unfortunately. Why they did not just make the air con with reverse cycle straight away is beyond me. Resistive heating is a stupid idea.
2 days ago I had the climate control timer on but the LEAF unplugged. My wife tells me that by the time she got in the car, it was showing about 96kms instead of about ~120 from the previous day.
To improve heating and reduce consumption, I recommend that you put the fan to a high setting (will switch auto off) instead of putting the temperature too high.
Looks like we are the closest to you in Rowville...

In reply to my "well what now?" I got a "we'll be in touch". I'm a bit depressed actually. There are only 3 things can shut the kettle down, a dodgy fluid temperature sensor, a crook recirculating pump or a failed heater. My temperature sensor is reading OK (2,500 ohms at 18 Celsius), I've got circulation so it must be the PTC. Horror stories on the US forum of cars being at the dealer for months & vehicle buybacks because they couldn't fix the PTCs.

Hey Kris let me know if you are still stuck. I have a Nissan consult 3 scanner and the workshop manual so may be able to help confirm this issue; you can be confident that the Nissan "mechanics" have the same or less to check it out.

Still in limbo lads, been a week now since the service. No one from Nissan returning my calls or emails, Javin still saying 'we haven't seen this before'. Would be keen to hook up to your scanner for a heads up Duncan. If it clearly identifies a specific part at least I'll have some ammo for trying to get the damn thing fixed. Old guy driving around in gloves & a beanie on these cold Richmond nights, just pathetic!

I remember a few years back when I rented a car in Fiji, it was the first time in my life that I have seen a car with no built in heater. It had an air con but no heating. Sorry, just kidding, it is really bad from Nissan to not answer your calls, I would really tell them off...

That's a worry. We take ours there thinking they're the most experienced with the LEAF since they've sold a few. If you're getting such a poor response I might go elsewhere if I ever have problems with mine. Maybe you can post something about it on the Steve Jarvin Facebook page? It's a bit quiet there but one guy complained and got a response.
Would you consider taking it to another Nissan workshop for a second opinion?

when you have fiddly little problems like this you need to find a dealer which isn't busy (why waste time on your car when the have 20 cars to service) or has employees which can't sleep at night if they haven't worked out a solution to the problem.
maybe try a smaller service department.. a drive to Newcastle might be a bit extreme through :-P
