It's not really solar but still relevant
Now I've had the Leaf for a few months and have some understanding of the power I'm drawing, I decided to sort out a new energy contract.
As it turns out there was no point in waiting because everyone's offers are on the same basis, ie a % discount on the list price for useage (but not supply fees).
I initially started with one of the "We'll find you the best deal" companies GoSwitch. The bottom line is they did NOT provide the best deals, they could not even match what the companies would offer directly. They also went to some effort to not answer my questions and to mislead me into thinking that they have access to all offers and the best offers. eg "Is this the best offer that supplier has" "Yes, it is the best offer we have from that supplier". Not quite the same thing
Anyway, the summary. For NSW electricity and gas as at June 2013
Energy Australia 13 15 02. 2 year contract, electricity discount 15%, gas discount 12%. 100% green power add 4.4c/kwh
AGL 13 12 45. 2 year contract, electricity discount 16%, gas discount 12% (+2% if you would allow direct debit, I do not). 100% green power add 5.5c/kwh
Origin 13 24 63. 1 year contract, electricity discount 22%, gas discount 11% (+1% for direct debit). The original offer was 17% but they offered 22 when I asked if that was their "best" offer. 100% green electricity 3.08c/kwh, 100% offset for gas $1per week (no other suppliers offered this).
This isn't an exhaustive survey or anything, just what I found. There are definitely other suppliers including Red and Dodo (who I will never deal with again after their terrible internet service). But at 22% discount it will save us about $500 per year so it was worth the phone calls.
